Job summary

North American Rail Solutions (NARS) is seeking a skilled Backhoe Operator to perform essential earthwork for railroad construction and maintenance projects. This hourly craft position also includes training to operate specialized on-track equipment such as Tamper machines and Ballast Regulators.

Travel and occasional weekend work are expected. The role requires prior backhoe experience, the ability to read plans, and strong safety focus.

Qualifications

• Backhoe experience: minimum 1 year, railroad construction preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen.
• Railroad construction experience is strongly preferred.
• Ability to read and follow plans and diagrams.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate heavy construction equipment safely.
• Perform required maintenance and keep equipment clean.
• Pre-start checks and daily lubrication/documentation.
• Grade earth and move material as directed by plans.
• Locate underground services prior to work.
• Lead crew and assist others as needed.
• Train others on machine operation when required.
• Coordinate machine actions with crew signals and plans.
• Ensure safety and document production standards.
