Job summary

Clay is seeking a backend product engineer to own the systems behind the parts of Clay customers use daily. The backend is the product, with enrichment, signals, workflows, and agents all surfaces where engineering and product decisions align.

You will own a surface end to end, work with design, data science, and GTM partners, ship quickly, observe real customers use, and then improve performance, reliability, and capabilities. This is a PM+engineering role with growth opportunities.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of hands-on engineering building products people actually use.
• You want to be a product manager as well as an engineer.
• Strong backend fundamentals: API and schema design, SQL (Postgres), query optimization.
• Bias toward impact and toward shipping.
• Empathetic communicator with clear, audience-aware messaging.
• Care about craft: bug-free, understandable code and engineering excellence.
• Diversity of perspectives strengthens the team and product.

Responsibilities

• Own a product surface end to end from problem definition to shipped outcome.
• Wear the PM hat: scope with design, data science, and GTM partners; write the spec and defend it.
• Talk to customers directly: observe usage, read tickets, learn where users hit walls.
• Ship fast, then learn: small teams, short cycles, real customer feedback.
• Build systems that empower new features: data models, APIs, and jobs that scale.
• Up-level the codebase: improve performance and reliability as Clay grows.
• Mentor and learn from other engineers to raise the team's capability.
