Job summary

Cardless is hiring a Backend Engineer to work on the systems that power partner card programs, including applications, underwriting, accounts, ledgers, transactions, rewards, risk, and partner APIs. You’ll tackle three roadmap areas: building new capabilities, scaling existing systems, and laying groundwork for in-house core infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Strong systems thinking and problem solving abilities.
• Experience building and operating production backend services end-to-end.
• Solid fundamentals in distributed systems, APIs, databases, and infrastructure.
• Proficiency in a modern backend language; primary usage is Java with Python for data work.
• Clear communication and care for correctness in code and decisions.

Responsibilities

• Design and build backend systems that move real money and support credit decisions for hundreds of thousands of cardholders.
• Take projects from ambiguity to production: scoping, design, implementation, testing, rollout, and operations.
• Work across domains rather than inside a single service to tackle high-value problems.
• Collaborate with product, risk, compliance, operations, and partner/vendor teams to ship robust, regulated solutions.
• Improve reliability, observability, and developer experience, leaving systems better than you found them.
