Job summary

Upstart is seeking a hands-on backend software engineer to build and operate systems for a digital lending product. You will own meaningful features from design through production, focusing on services, APIs, and data flows that support offer generation, pricing, underwriting, funding, and account management.

Collaborate with product, design, and engineering partners to scope, build, test, and launch improvements.

Qualifications

• BS in CS, engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience designing and using REST/GraphQL APIs.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain backend services and APIs across the borrower journey.
• Develop pricing, underwriting, funding, account-management workflows.
• Integrate backend services with customer-facing apps and external systems.
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering to scope, build, test, and launch improvements.
• Write maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
• Improve scalability, performance, observability, and reliability, including diagnosing production issues.
• Support experimentation and data-informed decisions.
