Job summary

Upstart is a digital-first lender and AI-powered platform offering remote work with periodic on-sites. The Software Engineer on the Cash Line team will design, build, and operate backend services powering the borrower journey across pricing, underwriting, funding, and account management.

You will collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to ship features that improve borrower flows, while maintaining high code quality through testing and reviews.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, and 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency building backend services and APIs in Python/Java/Kotlin/Ruby/Node.js.
• Experience designing REST or GraphQL APIs, data models, and distributed systems.
• Solid fundamentals in writing tested, maintainable code and code reviews.
• Ability to work with product/design partners to deliver features from requirements through production.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain reliable backend services and APIs supporting Cash Line and borrower journeys.
• Develop systems powering offer generation, pricing, underwriting, funding, and account management experiences.
• Work across the stack to integrate backend capabilities with borrower-facing apps and partner systems.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to scope, build, and ship features that reduce borrower friction.
• Write well-tested, maintainable code and participate in code reviews to raise quality and consistency.
• Contribute to performance, scalability, reliability, and observability of owned systems.
