FullTime Professional Washington, DC, US

30+ days ago Requisition ID: 1096

Salary Range: $170,000.00 To $210,000.00 Annually

Location: Washington, DC — onsite 4 days per week, 1 day telework

Clearance: Active Top Secret preferred. Active Secret acceptable with the ability to obtain an Interim TS — we'll support you through it.

Employment Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $170,000 – $210,000

Most cloud roles in the federal space promise automation and deliver a portal and a change request form. This one is the other kind.

Improvix Technologies is hiring an Azure Cloud/DevOps Engineer to help run and modernize the Azure environment behind a mission‑critical federal program in downtown DC. You'll own infrastructure as code end to end — writing the Terraform, building the GitLab pipelines that ship it, and standing up the Azure Virtual Desktop environment that a real user base depends on every day.

It's a small, senior, hands‑on team with direct access to the customer. When you propose a better way to do something, you're talking to the person who can approve it — not filing it upward and hoping.

WHY ENGINEERS TAKE THIS ROLE
  • Real IaC ownership. Terraform is the primary tool here, not an aspiration in a roadmap deck. You'll write it, review it, and own the modules.
  • A stack you can point to later. Azure core services, Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, PowerShell, AVD at production scale — a combination that's genuinely hard to get reps in, and that travels well.
  • Visible impact. The environment you build is the environment the mission runs on. You'll see your work land, and you'll hear about it from the people using it.
  • Room to build, not just maintain. This is an active modernization effort. There's greenfield work alongside the operational load.
  • A team that's actually in the room. Four days a week onsite with the customer and each other means fast decisions, real whiteboarding, and none of the multi‑day Slack loops that stall cloud work.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
  • Design, deploy, and maintain Azure infrastructure — VMs, VNets, Storage, Azure AD, and PaaS services.
  • Manage and optimize Azure networking: VNets, NSGs, load balancers, and VPN/ExpressRoute connectivity.
Infrastructure as Code
  • Develop and maintain the Terraform modules and templates that define the environment.
  • Automate everything worth automating using PowerShell, Bash, YAML/JSON, and GitLab pipelines.
  • Deploy, configure, and manage AVD environments — host pools, session hosts, FSLogix profile containers, and Azure AD/M365 integrations.
  • Troubleshoot and tune AVD performance for a live user community.
CI/CD & Automation
  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines in GitLab.
  • Automate cloud operations, system configuration, and monitoring.
Security & Compliance
  • Implement secure cloud practices built for federal environments — RBAC, Key Vault, IAM, and encryption standards.
  • Keep the environment aligned with NIST, RMF, FedRAMP, and agency‑specific controls.
Monitoring & Reliability
  • Use Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and related tooling to track system health, diagnose issues, and hold the line on SLAs.
  • Work directly with engineering, security, and program staff to drive the cloud modernization effort forward.
WHAT YOU BRING

We care more about what you've built than how many years you've been building it. If you can do the work below, apply — even if your background doesn't line up perfectly.

  • 5+ years in cloud engineering, DevOps, or systems engineering, with substantial hands‑on Azure work.
  • Demonstrated depth with Microsoft Azure core services and architecture — you've designed and run real environments, not just studied for the cert.
  • Strong hands‑on Terraform. This is the one we weight most heavily. You should be comfortable writing and maintaining modules others depend on.
  • Solid PowerShell scripting ability for automation and system configuration.
  • Working experience building and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines in GitLab.
  • Hands‑on experience with Azure Virtual Desktop in a production environment — host pools, session hosts, and FSLogix.
  • Experience supporting Azure networking: VNets, routing, NSGs, and VPN/ExpressRoute.
  • Familiarity with federal cloud security frameworks such as FedRAMP, NIST, and RMF.
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and the communication skills to explain your reasoning to engineers and non‑engineers alike.
  • Ability to work onsite in downtown Washington, DC four days per week.
BONUS POINTS
  • Experience supporting DoD or federal agency cloud environments.
  • Docker and Kubernetes (AKS).
  • Azure serverless tooling — Functions, Logic Apps, Event Grid.
  • Cost optimization using Azure Cost Management or FinOps practices.
  • Relevant Azure certifications (AZ-104, AZ-400, AZ-500).
WORKING HERE

Improvix Technologies delivers secure, modern, integrated technology solutions that keep the nation's most critical systems running. We're a company where engineers aren't three layers removed from the mission — you'll know exactly what your work supports and who it serves.
