Aztec Student Union Building Services Assistant

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities, and following direction from the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union Building Engineers and the Maintenance Leads, the Maintenance Assistant performs basic/minor repairs and maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; replaces light bulbs/lamps on the interior and exterior; performs basic carpentry and painting; repairs building fixtures, furniture, and equipment; assists with maintaining the vegetative roof and courtyard fountain; and helps ensure building cleanliness. The assistant supports the implementation of sustainable operations in the LEED Platinum Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Primary Functions
  • Check equipment and annotate logs of facility systems
  • Assist with cleaning, preventive maintenance and repairs of building fixtures and equipment
  • Assist in making minor repairs, including changing filters, light bulbs/lamps, and repairing mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment
  • Assist with light custodial and cleaning tasks; assist with moving, relocating and setting up furniture, fixtures and equipment
  • Respond to maintenance work order requests
  • Maintain stock material and supply inventories
  • Perform other maintenance, custodial and administrative tasks as assigned
Customer Service and Collaboration
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with various A.S. and University departments
Safety
  • Ensure all operations prioritize safety of staff and customers and comply with safety policies
  • Adhere to Associated Students' Code of Safe Practices
  • Report accidents to supervisor, complete required documentation, and forward to supervisor
  • Report maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment immediately
Minimum Requirements
Education
  • Students must be enrolled at least half-time at SDSU (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at SDSU (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Global Campus units do not meet the SDSU unit requirements
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States
Experience
  • Basic knowledge and experience with hand tools and power tools, and basic experience with carpentry and painting preferred
Training Requirements
  • Anti-Harassment training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)
  • Gender Awareness Training (must be completed within 30 days of hire)

Schedule & Working Conditions

This is a part-time position. Must be able to work up to 20 hours per week, including evenings and weekends; schedules vary according to business needs.

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily indoors with adequate lighting and temperature. May involve exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels. Work may be inside and outside the building in various weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Physical requirements include walking, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, climbing, working in confined spaces, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying loads. May involve exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, cold, heat, noise, vibrations and dampness.

Employment Category
