Job summary

FM Industries, Inc. seeks a Metallography Lab Tech in Phoenix, AZ to conduct metallography analysis and support coating production. You will learn lab protocols under supervision and contribute to day-to-day lab operations.

Responsibilities include preparing samples, measuring with precision instruments, and delivering results to engineers. Training lasts several weeks with potential OT; candidates should have trade school or associate degree and mechanical/electrical aptitude.

Qualifications

  • Trade school or an associate degree in Technology is preferred.
  • Possess mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Ability to problem solve and pay close attention to details.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment and metallographic evaluations is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual documentation of various incoming samples.
  • Perform and acquire accurate physical measurements using micrometer, calipers, and stereo microscopes.
  • Operate band saws/abrasive/precision saws to section samples and perform mounting/impregnation for metallography.
  • Prepare metallurgical samples for microscopic evaluation per specifications; samples include coated and uncoated aluminum and other materials.
  • Learn and perform material hardness testing as required by engineers.
  • Learn and apply ASTM/ISO requirements and safe operating procedures for lab metallography.
  • Maintain consumables for metallurgical evaluation needs.
  • Deliver metallographic results to engineers/team leads per protocols.
  • Comply with environmental, health and safety laws and company policies.

Hours:

2 nd shift

During training in Roosevelt (3-4 weeks), Mon to Fri 4am to 4pm

After training in Magnolia Sun to Wed 4pm - 4 am, OT as needed.

DESCRIPTION:

The Metallography Lab Tech is a hands-on position which works under the supervision of a Metallography Lab Supervisor to effectively deliver high-quality metallography analysis and is responsible for the day-to-day lab operation and will learn and deploy lab protocols to support coating production needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Perform visual documentation of various incoming samples.
  • Perform and acquire accurate physical measurements using micrometer, calipers, and stereo microscopes.
  • Operate band saws/abrasive/precision saws to section samples, mounting press and vacuum impregnation of samples required for metallography.
  • Prepare metallurgical sample for microscopic evaluation as per specifications/protocols. Samples include thermal spray coated, bare aluminum, anodized aluminum, and other monolithic materials.
  • Ability to learn and perform material hardness testing as required by the engineer.
  • Ability to learn and possess knowledge of various ASTM and ISO requirements and safe operating procedures related to various lab metallography operations.
  • Maintaining consumables for various metallurgical evaluation needs.
  • Per engineering protocols, deliver appropriate micrographic/metallographic results to the engineers/team leads.
  • Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, Company policy and accepted safe work practices
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • Trade school or an associate degree in Technology is preferred
  • Possess mechanical and electrical aptitude
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to pay close attention to details of various processes
  • Ability to perform daily tasks with little or no supervision
  • Experience working with laboratory test equipment including metallographic evaluations, failure analysis, electrical testing, and non-destructive evaluation is beneficial
  • Experience with plasma spray equipment and ABB robots is beneficial
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Computer proficiency (Excel, Word)

Sunday thru Wednesday 4pm to 4am after training. Training will be Monday-Friday 4am -4pm. Training takes 3-4 weeks to complete. Training will be conducted between our Roosevelt and Magnolia sites.
