Job summary

FM Industries in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a Metallography Lab Tech to perform metallography analyses and support coating production. You will follow lab protocols, operate band and precision saws, document results, and collaborate with engineers to deliver reliable micrographic data.

Ideal candidates have a trade school or tech associate, mechanical/electrical aptitude, attention to detail, and can lift up to 40 lbs.

Qualifications

  • Trade school or an associate degree in Technology is preferred.
  • Possess mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Ability to problem solve and pay close attention to details.
  • Experience with laboratory test equipment including metallographic evaluations is beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Perform visual documentation of incoming samples.
  • Measure using micrometer, calipers and stereo microscope.
  • Operate band/precision saws and mounting press for metallography.
  • Prepare metallurgical samples for microscopic evaluation per protocols.
  • Learn material hardness testing as required by the engineer.
  • Follow ASTM/ISO requirements and safe operating procedures.
  • Maintain consumables for metallurgical evaluation needs.
  • Deliver micrographic/metallographic results to engineers/lead staff.
  • Comply with environmental, health and safety laws and company policies.

DESCRIPTION:

The Metallography Lab Tech is a hands-on position which works under the supervision of a Metallography Lab Supervisor to effectively deliver high-quality m etallography analysis and is responsible for the day-to-day lab operation and will learn and deploy lab protocols to support coating production needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform visual documentation of various incoming samples.
  • Perform and acquire accurate physical measurements using micrometer, calipers, and stereo microscopes.
  • Operate band saws/abrasive/precision saws to section samples, mounting press and vacuum impregnation of samples required for metallography.
  • Prepare metallurgical sample for microscopic evaluation as per specifications/protocols. Samples include thermal spray coated, bare aluminum, anodized aluminum, and other monolithic materials.
  • Ability to learn and perform material hardness testing as required by the engineer.
  • Ability to learn and possess knowledge of various ASTM and ISO requirements and safe operating procedures related to various lab metallography operations.
  • Maintaining consumables for various metallurgical evaluation needs.
  • Per engineering protocols, deliver appropriate micrographic/metallographic results to the engineers/team leads.
  • Comply with applicable environmental, health and safety laws and regulations, Company policy and accepted safe work practices

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Trade school or an associate degree in Technology is preferred
  • Possess mechanical and electrical aptitude
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to pay close attention to details of various processes
  • Ability to perform daily tasks with little or no supervisionexperience working with laboratory test equipment including metallographic evaluations, failure analysis, electrical testing, and non-destructive evaluation is beneficial
  • Experience with plasma spray equipment and ABB robots is beneficial
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Computer proficiency (Excel, Word)

Wednesday thru Saturday 4pm to 4am after training. Training will be Monday-Friday 4am-4pm. Training takes 3-4 weeks to complete. Training will be conducted between our Roosevelt and Magnolia sites.
