Title AY25-26 Graduate Assistant - Math Support Specialist for Math Services

Position Description

The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.

Department Summary

The Academic Achievement Center ( AAC ) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides Academic Advising for specific populations as well as Learning Assistance support to undergraduate students. The AAC also houses Student Accessibility Services and Testing Services. Within Learning Assistance there are six main areas: Academic Coaching, Accounting and Finance Lab, Math Services, Tutoring Central, Tutoring for Multilingual Students, and the Writing Studio. All areas within the AAC dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in math courses with a focus on STEM math courses including MATH 105 (Mathematical Reasoning and Problem Solving), Business Calculus, Statistics, Elementary Education Major Math Courses.
  • Partner with math faculty in above courses to ensure competency around current and updated course content.
  • Schedule classroom visits at the beginning of each semester to promote all Math Services
  • Facilitate group tutoring sessions each week for select non- STEM courses
  • Plan and facilitate ongoing content training for tutors in non- STEM math courses
  • Mentor tutors working in non- STEM math courses
  • Revising (with Director) and distributing PR materials, as needed
  • Maintain and develop (with Director) website materials.
  • Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, anti-racism, & disability rights & advocacy throughout the AAC and Bridgewater State University community.
  • Thoughtfully participate in weekly staff meetings, supervision meetings, and trainings and seek out additional training on topics relevant to field of study and topics such as cultural competence, equity, and inclusion
  • Work with supervisor to identify and design a research project that will be presented at the College of Graduate Studies required Research Symposium, held each spring semester.
  • Perform other professional tasks as assigned by administrators in the Academic Achievement Center.
  • Curate weekly reports via appointment management system (Accudemia) for designated courses and distribute to appropriate faculty members and tutors on weekly basis.
Program Assessment Duties
  • Assist the Director in developing and implementing an assessment plan for non- STEM offerings in Math Services.
  • Monitor traffic patterns via Accudemia and curate to Excel spreadsheet to assess coverage needs for non- STEM offerings in Math Services
  • Assist the Director in analyzing assessment data and plan to address their findings.
Preferred Qualifications

Skills Needed/Preferred

  • Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree and must be accepted to a graduate program at Bridgewater State University. A degree in Mathematics or field related to Mathematics is required. Preference will be given to candidates enrolled in the Mathematics Master’s programs.
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate competence in the math courses they will be tutoring
  • Candidates must have an interest in professional development, an ability to work effectively with others, an ability to work with diverse populations (e.g., students with learning disabilities and other disabilities, students of color, multilingual students, non-binary and transgender students, and non-traditional students)
  • Experience in educational assessment and/or data collection and analysis is strongly preferred
