Position Description
The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.
Department Summary
The Academic Achievement Center ( AAC ) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides academic advising for specific populations as well as learning assistance support to undergraduate students. The AAC also houses Student Accessibility Services and Testing Services. Within Learning Assistance there are six main areas: Academic Coaching, Accounting and Finance Lab, Math Services, Tutoring Central, Second Language Services, and the Writing Studio. All areas within the AAC dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Position Summary
Academic Coaching is defined as a collaborative learning process that occurs between a coach and a student and examines a student’s academic strengths and needs. A Coach offers guidance and identifies strategies that can lead the student to academic achievement. Academic Coaching provides students with continuous support in various academic elements, such as learning/study strategies and time management. Coaches understand that each student has different strengths and perspectives and strive to accommodate each student’s academic needs. Academic coaches support undergraduate and graduate students.
Core Duties
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Develop and provide student-centered university level learning assistance such as: goal setting, motivation, time/task management, active learning strategies (notetaking, reading comprehension, test-taking), communication with professors, research and library navigation assistance, campus resources and referrals for any enrolled undergraduate and graduate student using a social justice lens.
- Assist in the development and presentation of in-class presentations/workshops throughout the semester (may require evening scheduling). These presentations accommodate faculty requests and/or requests from other departments/student organizations and they deliver learning assistance to the broader population of students.
- Spearhead equity-minded initiatives that will advance the mission and further develop the area of Academic Coaching. Past initiatives have included development of marketing materials, workshop development, collaboration with other departments, outreach to special populations, and data collection and analysis.
- Conduct outreach to students, faculty and staff regarding support services provided by Academic Coaching.
- Maintain a spreadsheet of utilization data regarding Academic Coaching services.
- Thoughtfully participate in regularly scheduled staff and supervision meetings, as well as in-service training opportunities.
- Seek out training opportunities on learning assistance topics, and other topics such as cultural competence, ADA compliance and accessibility services, equity, inclusion, and other relevant topics.
- Facilitate weekly book clubs for students enrolled in the supported Writing Rhetorically, ENGL 101E and Academic Strategies Colloquium, ENGL 144 courses.
- Contribute to social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter).
- Work with supervisor to identify and design a research project that will be presented at the College of Graduate Studies required Research Symposium, held each spring semester.
- Collaborate with all AAC staff and faculty as needed and/or required; Perform other professional tasks as assigned by administrators in the Academic Achievement Center.
- Strive to uphold the mission of the AAC as a center guided by the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, anti-racism, & disability rights & advocacy throughout the AAC and Bridgewater State University community.
Preferred Qualifications
Required Minimum Qualifications
To succeed in this role, the candidate will need:
- Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, motivation, and high degree of openness to new approaches and new ideas
- Demonstrated willingness to present to large groups and lead activities in a workshop/presentation setting
- Experience and/or ability to work with, and motivate, students from diverse populations (e.g., students with learning disabilities and other disabilities, students of color, multilingual students, non-binary and transgender students, and non-traditional students)
- Commitment to customer service excellence/support to enhance an environment of equity, diversity and inclusion
- Ability to initiate work independently, without direct supervision, as well as identify and resolve day-to-day problems
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Strong computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office products
Preferred Qualifications- A strong interest in college student development and/or learning theory
- Experience in teaching, academic tutoring, peer mentoring and/or counseling is preferred
- Interest in interpreting data, as it relates to program growth and development
