Position Description

Department Description:
The Academic Achievement Center ( AAC ) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides academic advising for specific populations as well as learning assistance support to undergraduate students. Learning assistance is composed of six centers including Academic Coaching, Accounting & Finance Lab, Tutoring Central, Math and Statistics Tutoring, Tutoring for Multilingual Students, and Writing Studio. The AAC also houses Student Accessibility Services and Testing Services. The AAC dedicates each day to student success and retention, as well as equity and inclusion.

Position Description:
TMS tutors provide peer mentorship and language support to BSU students for whom English is an additional language. Students and tutors are paired at the beginning of the semester and meet for an hour each week. Tutors help students achieve a higher proficiency in conversation and public speaking, listening comprehension, writing, and reading in English. Tutors must take ENGL 205, a one credit class, for two semesters in order to receive continuous feedback on tutoring strategies. The class meets on Tuesdays from 3:25-4:15pm.

Requirements for Tutors:

  • BSU Undergrad student, registered for a minimum of 6 credits
  • Obtained a grade of B or higher in ENGL 101 and 102
  • The ability to submit a sample of formal writing: an essay or research paper.
  • Availability to attend a required pre-service tutor training prior to the start of the semester
  • Tutors must take ENGL 205, a one credit class, for two semesters in order to receive continuous feedback on tutoring strategies. The class meets on Thursdays from 3:25-4:15pm
