Overview

Responsible for oversight and daily supervision of animal care staff and facilities, produce quality product following SOPs and Outlines of Production (OPs) while maintaining biosecurity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Responsible for daily oversight of animal care staff at assigned facility to ensure accurate and timely completion of work and paperwork according to applicable SOPs and OPs.
• Train staff on poultry husbandry duties and monitor training programs to ensure ongoing effectiveness. Training includes but is not limited to bird receipts, inoculations, test bleeds, environmental sampling, final bleeds, bursa harvests, temperature monitoring, and room recycling.
• Perform or oversee submission of required testing submission to the testing laboratory.
• Oversee processing of USDA licensed BDA and Bursa products.
• Prepare, review, and submit documentation for testing and/or release of USDA licensed BDA and Bursa products.
• Coordinate with direct supervisor to determine bird deliveries for Bursa and BDA products.
• Work with suppliers on discounts/information/sourcing.
• Work with outside contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc.
• Oversee maintenance and housekeeping of all farm property and production/processing equipment.
• Maintain records according to SOPs and OPs.
• Deliver product to laboratory for final testing or shipping as needed.
• Respond to alarms quickly and efficiently.
• Work in animal rooms and laboratory as needed.
• Monitor performance of direct reports.
• Provide regular coaching and counseling.
• Partnering with next level of management, prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals initiated by direct reports.
• Authorize overtime as needed.
• Review and approve timecards, vacation/time off requests, and coordinate vacation/time off schedules.
• Interview and select qualified exempt and non-exempt departmental personnel with the direct supervisor.
• Recommend, review and approve personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises.
• Partner with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues.
• Prepare and/or approve appropriate personnel action paperwork.
• Identify training and development needs of direct reports.
• Monitor training programs to ensure ongoing effectiveness.
• Ensure optimum performance of group function.
• Determine and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.
• Represent the department in regulatory and customer audits.
• Communicate departmental policies and procedures; ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to employees.
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: Associates degree or equivalent in biological science; Bachelor s degree preferred.
• Experience: 4-6 years related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
• Certification/Licensure: Valid Driver s License
• Other: Must be able to understand equipment operation and maintenance; supervisory skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office; good written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demands

• Able to lift or otherwise move 30- 60 lbs.
• Able to stand for prolonged periods of time.
• Able to wear applicable personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Environment

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
• The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
• Regularly wears protective clothing (scrubs, lab coats, safety glasses and gloves).
• Regularly required to use hands to pick up and hold birds, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
• Regularly required to move about the production facilities and grounds, position self to work with birds and at times remain stationary.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Prohibited contact includes reptiles, amphibians, rodents, and certain wild animals (e.g., snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, raccoons, skunks, opossums, squirrels, deer mice), or animals requiring feeding of rodents or raw/frozen animal products.
• What animal contact is permitted? Permitted animals include dogs, cats, fish, and traditional farm animals (horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, llamas/alpacas). Employees may not handle raw or frozen meat or poultry products before work.
• How is biosecurity enforced? All candidates must complete a Biosecurity & Animal Ownership Disclosure Form prior to hire and certify ongoing compliance. Violations or falsification may result in disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination.
