Position: AVP, Underwriting – Environmental Liability
Role Overview:
The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Underwriting – Environmental Liability is a market-facing underwriting role responsible for underwriting and managing new and renewal Environmental Liability business, developing strong broker relationships, and contributing to the profitable growth and performance of the portfolio.
The AVP will combine deep technical underwriting expertise with strong commercial judgment and production capabilities to identify, evaluate, price, negotiate, and close complex environmental risks. The role will manage an assigned book, territory, or broker portfolio within established underwriting authority and appetite while maintaining accountability for premium, profitability, retention, and new business objectives.
This position will also contribute to portfolio management and the continued development of Ategrity’s Environmental Liability capabilities. The AVP will serve as a technical resource, manage and develop underwriters, and partner across the organization to strengthen underwriting execution, product capabilities, and market presence.
Key Responsibilities
- Underwrite and manage Environmental Liability business. Underwrite complex new and renewal accounts within established authority, guidelines, and risk appetite, determining appropriate risk selection, pricing, limits, retentions, terms, conditions, and coverage structure.
- Own book performance. Manage an assigned book, territory, or broker portfolio to established premium, profitability, retention, and new business objectives while monitoring pricing adequacy, loss trends, concentrations, and emerging exposures.
- Drive profitable growth. Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of qualified opportunities and execute transactions with wholesale and retail brokers while maintaining disciplined risk selection and underwriting execution.
- Provide technical underwriting expertise. Analyze operations, environmental exposures, loss history, financial information, environmental and engineering reports, and other relevant data; serve as a technical resource on complex environmental risks and underwriting matters.
- Lead broker and market development. Develop and strengthen relationships with wholesale and retail brokers, proactively market Ategrity’s Environmental Liability capabilities and appetite, and identify opportunities to expand relationships, submission flow, and conversion.
- Maintain a strong market presence. Represent Ategrity in broker and client meetings, industry conferences, and market events while staying current on competitor activity, pricing, capacity, coverage developments, and emerging environmental exposures.
- Support portfolio management. Analyze portfolio and account performance to identify trends, concentrations, opportunities, and areas requiring corrective action, and contribute to underwriting and portfolio reviews.
- Advance underwriting capabilities. Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, products, forms, tools, and processes as the Environmental Liability business grows.
- Lead and develop underwriting talent. Manage and support underwriters, provide coaching and technical guidance, and share environmental underwriting knowledge and market expertise across the organization.
- Collaborate across the organization. Partner with Claims, Actuarial, Finance, Operations, Legal, Product, and other internal stakeholders to support sound underwriting decisions, portfolio performance, product development, and service.
- Ensure underwriting and operational excellence. Maintain compliance with underwriting authorities, guidelines, documentation standards, regulatory requirements, established workflows, and internal review and audit expectations.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- 5+ years of Environmental Liability, specialty casualty, or related commercial underwriting experience, with meaningful experience underwriting environmental risks.
- Demonstrated track record of underwriting profitable new and renewal business.
- Strong technical knowledge of Environmental Liability coverages, forms, endorsements, exclusions, and underwriting considerations.
- Experience underwriting excess and surplus/non-admitted business.
- Experience working with both wholesale and retail brokers.
- Demonstrated expertise in risk selection, exposure analysis, pricing, coverage structuring, and negotiation.
- Strong understanding of the legal and regulatory considerations applicable to Environmental Liability underwriting.
- Demonstrated ability to develop broker relationships, generate new business opportunities, and successfully negotiate and close business.
- Experience managing and developing underwriters.
- Strong analytical, organizational, written, verbal, and relationship-management skills.
- Ability and willingness to travel as business needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience underwriting a range of environmental products, including Pollution Legal Liability/Site Pollution Liability, Contractors Pollution Liability, and related Environmental Casualty coverages.
- Experience underwriting both primary and excess business.
- Established relationships with key Environmental Liability wholesale and retail brokers.
- Experience managing an assigned territory, broker portfolio, or substantial book of Environmental Liability business.
- CPCU, ARM, or other relevant professional designation.
