Job Description Summary

The work of Nationwide Economics is always shifting due to changes in the economy and financial markets. As a Financial Market Economist, you’ll provide macroeconomic and interest rate forecasts as an input to a business cycle framework that helps guide Nationwide Investments’ strategies. Additionally, you’ll provide ongoing insights and analysis of incoming economic data utilizing high-level research and econometric modeling.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Applies statistical and economic modeling techniques to determine and forecast market, investment, and broad economic conditions used as inputs into the business cycle framework which helps guide Nationwide Investments’ strategies.

  • Works directly with the Chief Investment Officer and other investment leaders to develop and present in-depth economic insights.

  • Provides economic insights to assist the sales effort through client meetings, presentations, conference calls and wholesaler training/education.

  • Writes daily commentaries on the economy and financial markets for internal and external use.

  • Contributes to the Nationwide Markets Insights Podcasts.

  • Acts as a media contact for financial market economic insights.

  • Manages a small team consisting of other two economists who support Nationwide Investments.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to SVP, Chief Economist. Leads a team of two direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate degree in economics, finance, or related field required. Master's degree in economics or business administration preferred. Ph.D. in economics or finance preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) preferred.

Experience: Typically, 10 or more years of experience with increasing responsibility in economic analysis, econometric modeling, and economic/financial forecasting. Experience in and a close understanding of financial markets. Experience working with a macroeconomic model and creating macro scenarios is a plus.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Problem solving, teamwork, outstanding communication, strong presentation skills, and econometric/quantitative skills. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously with tight timeframes. Proficient in tools such as Bloomberg, Eviews, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt)

Working Conditions: On-sight on an investment trading floor in Columbus, Ohio. Some travel may be required.
