Compensation Overview: The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad spectrum of salaries across the country. The actual salary will be determined by factors such as the scope, complexity, and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; and other employment conditions. Employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards as part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program.

Salary Range: $129,200.00 - $213,200.00

What Is the Opportunity?

Investigate, evaluate, reserve, negotiate, and resolve the company's most severe and/or complex Life Science medical products, clinical trial, and pharmaceutical bodily injury claims, as well as General Liability Coverage B claims and E&O claims involving Life Sciences insureds, across multiple jurisdictions, following Best Practices. Provide quality claim handling and superior customer service on assigned claims, managing indemnity & expense effectively. Promptly handle claims through essential functions such as contacts, investigation, damages development, evaluation, reserving, litigation management, negotiation, and resolution. Serve as an expert technical resource, providing consulting and training to other claim professionals, business partners, customers, and stakeholders as needed.

What Will You Do?

  • Claim Handling:
  • Handle assigned severe/complex Life Science medical products, clinical trial, and pharmaceutical bodily injury claims, as well as General Liability Coverage B and E&O claims involving Life Sciences insureds.
  • Deliver quality customer service with timely coverage analysis and communication based on policy information and case facts.
  • Investigate claims through contact with policyholders, claimants, law enforcement, witnesses, medical providers, and experts to determine liability, damages, and contribution potential.
  • Interview witnesses and stakeholders; take statements as appropriate.
  • Conduct outside investigations as needed.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources such as Subro, Risk Control, nurse consultants, the Travelers Lab, Claim Legal, and investigators for claim evaluation.
  • Verify injury or property damage extent by reviewing records and damages documentation.
  • Use diary management systems to ensure timely handling of claims.
  • Evaluate liability and damages exposure periodically.
  • Establish and maintain proper indemnity and expense reserves.
  • Share knowledge of creative resolution techniques to improve claim outcomes.
  • Apply claim quality management protocols, best practices, and metrics; document rationales for deviations.
  • Develop and employ creative resolution strategies.
  • Manage loss adjustment expenses efficiently.
  • Evaluate recovery potential; manage recovery efforts or direct resources accordingly.
  • Disposit all claims within delegated authority, negotiating with insureds and claimants or their legal representatives.
  • Ensure appropriate resources are applied to each claim for optimal results and cost management.

Leadership:

  • Mentor and coach less experienced claim professionals to build technical expertise and bench strength.

Communication/Influence:

  • Consult with Manager on Claim Coverage Counsel use as needed.
  • Guide underwriting partners on loss reserves and claim management strategies.
  • Participate in roundtables and authority discussions to improve payout outcomes.
  • Update relevant parties with new facts and their impact on liability and settlement options.
  • Represent the company as a technical resource in legal proceedings as needed.
  • Stay informed on legal trends and communicate insights to relevant departments.
  • Assist in marketing efforts and account stewardship.
  • Review contracts to support underwriting of E&O exposures.
  • Review other carriers’ Medical Products policies where Travelers does not provide coverage.
  • Assist in developing Life Sciences coverage forms and conduct training for underwriters.

Other Accountabilities:

  • Manage litigation strategically, including counsel selection, claim and legal strategy evaluation.
  • Implement alternative resolution techniques.
  • Develop litigation plans, including discovery and legal expenses management.
  • Attend legal proceedings such as depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
  • Monitor the quality of legal counsel’s work.
  • Participate in periodic file quality reviews.
  • Handle confidential information appropriately.
  • Fulfill service commitments outlined in Special Account Communications and agent/broker inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Law degree preferred.
  • 5-7 years of medical products and/or pharmaceutical litigation or claim handling experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of coverage, liability, damages analysis, and litigation process, including relevant laws and expert management skills.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to interpret and convey technical information clearly.
  • Thorough understanding of product lines, claim objectives, and legal issues in claim resolution.
  • Experience handling large or complex liability claims.
  • Familiarity with commercial and personal lines policies, exclusions, ISO forms, and claims practices.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and advise on complex coverage and liability issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with partners.
  • Technological proficiency as a strategic tool.
  • Ability to make independent decisions up to $1,000,000.
  • Core competencies include leading results, driving change, leading others, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking.

What is a Must Have?

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5 years bodily injury litigation claim handling or 10 years litigation experience.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire necessary Insurance License(s) within three months of starting the role.
