Role overview

We are seeking an Avionics Housing Designer to join our Lunar Lander Team. In this role, you will work on-site in Houston, TX, as part of a cross-functional engineering team developing, manufacturing, testing, and supporting the on-orbit operation of flight enclosures and mechanical structures for vehicle avionics systems. The ideal candidate is passionate about space exploration, has strong design fundamentals, and thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical enclosures and interfaces for avionics systems on the Lunar Lander platform.
  • Generate 3D CAD models, detailed part and assembly drawings, and mechanical interface documentation using Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Assist in the development of manufacturing products, including support tooling and assembly processes.
  • Participate in the development and integration of PCBAs, connectors, and thermal management hardware such as heat sinks, card locks, and thermal bus bars.
  • Address design considerations such as vibration and shock mitigation, grounding, and EMI/EMC shielding.
  • Support prototype and flight hardware assembly efforts in coordination with Avionics lab technicians.
  • Assist in the qualification and acceptance environmental testing of flight hardware.
  • Ensure mechanical designs meet relevant NASA, ESA, and commercial spaceflight standards and requirements.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis efforts and support design revisions as needed.
  • Actively learn from senior engineers and contribute to a collaborative design culture that emphasizes continuous improvement and technical excellence.
Minimum Requirements
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in mechanical design; or M.S. degree with at least 3 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Familiarity with structural and thermal analysis methods (hand calculations and basic simulation).
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 standards for engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Ability to work in a fast-changing environment and adapt to evolving technical challenges.
  • Strong desire to learn and take on increased responsibility over time.
Desired Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in SolidWorks and/or Creo for high-reliability mechanical design.
  • Experience designing and developing electronics housings with the following considerations:
    • Integration of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs).
    • Internal and external connector layouts and backplane interfaces.
    • Thermal management strategies: heat sinks, vias, thermal interface materials.
    • Shock and vibration isolation techniques.
    • EMI/EMC and grounding strategies.
    • Design for manufacturability and ease of assembly.
  • Experience supporting flight hardware testing, including environmental stress screening and qualification testing.
  • Understanding of mechanical design methodology, basic GD&T, and aerospace manufacturing techniques.
