Job description

The Assistant Principal Inspector (Operations Rotorcraft/Helicopter) is responsible for overseeing general aviation operations across multiple FAA parts, including 91, 133, 135, 136, 137, 141, and 183.

General Requirements for All 1825 Positions:
  1. Not more than two separate incidents involving FAA regulations violations in the last 5 years
  2. Valid State driver's license
  3. Fluency in English
  4. No chemical dependencies or drug abuse affecting job performance
  5. High School diploma or equivalent
Medical Requirements for All Positions:

Applicants must be physically capable of performing duties safely, with or without reasonable accommodation. Minimum medical standards include:

  1. Good distant vision in each eye, able to read printed materials without strain (glasses/contact lenses allowed)
  2. Ability to hear conversational voice (hearing aids permitted)
  3. No physical condition that poses a hazard or impairs ability to fly as a passenger

Positions requiring aircraft operation participation additionally require:

  1. Valid second-class FAA medical certificate
  2. Recurrent medical examinations as per FAA regulations

Applicants not requiring a second-class certificate must:

  1. Provide documentation from a physician certifying they meet medical standards
  2. Undergo individualized assessment if they do not meet standards but are otherwise qualified
Rotorcraft-Helicopter Specific Requirements:
  • Minimum 100 flight hours in Rotorcraft-Helicopter in the last three years
  • Commercial Helicopter Pilot Rating with Instrument or Airline Transport Pilot with Helicopter Rating
  • Flight Instructor Certificate Rotorcraft-Helicopter, Flight Instructor Instrument Helicopter Rating
  • 1,200 total flight hours (including 1,000 actual, 250 night hours with 15 in helicopter)
  • 250 helicopter flight hours, including at least 75 as pilot-in-command or supervised duties
  • Cross-country flight time of 500 hours
  • 75 hours instrument flight time, with at least 50 in helicopters as pilot-in-command or supervised
Experience and Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience comparable to FV-H/FG-12, such as activities related to certification, surveillance, investigation, and enforcement of FAR Part 135 carriers/air operators.

Quality Ranking Factor: Preferred candidates will have experience with a Commercial certificate in Rotorcraft/Helicopter category and class ratings, including an Instrument, Helicopter rating if Commercial.

Applicants transferring between specialties at the same grade are encouraged to complete and upload the Qualifications Assessment Tool (QAT) check sheet, available in Order 3410.26. Recency of experience is waived for current FAA employees in the 1825 series.
