Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking an Aviation Civil Engineer II in Washington, DC. This full-time role focuses on leading the civil design for aviation projects within a dynamic, ESOP-driven firm delivering services to public agencies and private clients nationwide.

Responsibilities include coordinating with design teams, managing project hours, budgets, quality control, and client communications to ensure on-time delivery and adherence to specifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
  • 8–10+ years experience in a specialized discipline within civil/aviation engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Support and lead civil design tasks for aviation clients.
  • Coordinate with project engineers to meet schedule, budget and quality targets.
  • Provide design status updates and manage sub-tasks within the discipline.

Position summary: Responsible for performing and leading the civil engineering design for tasks or sub‑tasks to support aviation clients by using basic project management and advanced knowledge of general engineering principles. Coordinates with design and other project engineers to efficiently complete project goals delivered on schedule, budget, and at a quality level that meets internal and client expectations.

Compensation for this position is $102,960.00 - $124,800.00, commensurate with experience, education and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Supporting overall Project Manager by executing project management responsibilities for respective discipline, including, developing hours estimates, scope, etc.
  • Provide design status updates to the Project Manager
  • Maintain current department organizational and quality control standards and update as and where necessary
  • Track the budgets of discipline task(s)
  • Project Meeting Coordination (Organize and Run Meetings)
  • Oversee sub-tasks within their respective discipline for a project
  • Executing quality control and quality assurance plans as provided by the PMP for project
  • Delegate project tasks to project team members
  • Coaching/mentoring design staff through the design process
  • Provide consultative services to the client(s), including attending client meetings, providing timely updates, and appropriate solutions to meet their expectations
  • Collaborate and manage project sub-consultants and other internal disciplines
  • Support the development of extra work order requests
  • Perform alternative studies, evaluate impacts, develop and finalize reports for client
  • Plan, schedule, conduct or coordinate detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope
  • Design projects using advanced discipline knowledge, client specifications and guidelines using design software and drawing tools
  • Perform or check design computations
  • Prepare and compile contract plans, specifications and estimates
  • Coordinate with internal team members to ensure alignment and project completion by the defined deadline and established quality
  • Technical oversight and guidance/support of Design Engineers within department
  • (If Manages Others) Lead and manage team members by providing leadership and continuous performance management (setting expectations, goals, feedback, 1:1 meeting, coaching) that supports the growth and development of team
Nonessential functions and responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Skills
  • Proficient in discipline specific design software including AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley Open Roads Designer/MicroStation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • Professional Engineer License
  • 8 to 10+ years' experience in specialized discipline
Preferred Experience
  • Supervisory role on project task experience preferred
  • Experience working with other related disciplines (Structures/Drainage/Geotech)
  • PMP Certification
Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
