Job summary

Sun Valley Resort is seeking an experienced Snow Safety Director to lead avalanche mitigation and snow safety programs for guests and staff. You will oversee the Snow Safety Team, avalanche forecasting, the explosives program, and coordination with Ski Patrol and Mountain Operations.

The ideal candidate brings extensive avalanche safety expertise, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety culture. A pro-active, high-stakes decision-maker with skiing ability in varied conditions is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Avalanche Science, Snow Science, Outdoor Recreation, Emergency Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Five+ years in snow safety/avalanche operations with leadership experience preferred.
  • Pro 2 certification or higher preferred.
  • OEC/EMT or higher medical certification required.
  • Explosives Handlers License and experience with explosives management.”

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve snow safety and avalanche mitigation programs, including hazard assessment, forecasting, mitigation strategies, and emergency procedures.
  • Lead, supervise, train, and develop the Snow Safety Team and ensure staff certifications and readiness.
  • Oversee the avalanche dog program and ensure ongoing training and readiness.
  • Act as Responsible Person for ATF explosives program including safe storage, inventory, and regulatory compliance.
  • Conduct daily snowpack, terrain, and weather assessments to identify hazards and implement mitigations.
  • Coordinate with Ski Patrol, Mountain Operations, Grooming, Snowmaking, Lift Operations, and others for terrain openings and emergency response.
  • Maintain records of weather observations, forecasting, mitigation activities, training, incidents, and regulatory documents.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets and capital planning.
  • Deliver snow safety education for employees and guests, including avalanche awareness and Skier Responsibility Code.
  • Lead or assist with avalanche rescue operations and coordination with external agencies if required.
  • Foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
