Job summary

Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs in Milwaukee, WI seeks a Physician Assistant for the Pre-Operative & Pre-Procedure Clinic (COTC). The PA will work with full autonomy as defined by VHA Directive 1063 for non-procedural assignments and will consult a collaborating physician as needed.

The role does not include surgical or bedside procedures; the PA may write orders within scope and use CPRS for documentation.

Qualifications

• Active PA license and PA-C certification.
• Experience in pre-operative or perioperative assessment.
• Ability to write medical orders within scope of practice.

Responsibilities

• Perform pre-operative evaluation and documentation.
• Coordinate pre-operative testing and clearance.
• Write medical orders within scope of practice.
• Utilize CPRS for documentation of clinical activities.
• Maintain the COTC appointment schedule.
• Track surgical/procedural candidates and clearance status.
• Ensure timely completion of pre-op requirements.
• Communicate pertinent findings to operating team.
• Coordinate testing and consults (e.g. anesthesia, cardiology).
• Assist in day-to-day management of patients preparing for procedures.
• Make follow-up calls to review readiness and update records.
• Order pre-operative antibiotics per protocol.
• Provide patient and family education about procedures and aftercare.
• Obtain informed consent when within scope of practice.
• Identify deviations from protocols and intervene to correct variances.
• Collaborate with RN staff, anesthesia, clearing physicians, and specialists.
• Support teaching of residents and trainees in pre-operative protocols.
