Salary Range: $39,145 - $73,174/yr. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, and/or experience.
Performs advanced maintenance and repairs on agency vehicles, trucks, trailers, and small equipment.
Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to work evening, midnight, and/or weekend shifts. Shift times may vary.
Minimum Requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
- U.S. Citizen or possess a current permanent resident card.
- Clean criminal history; any arrest history will be individually evaluated.
- No illegal drug usage within the past year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
- Valid Florida driver’s license.
- Must attend and successfully complete the agency-sponsored Law Enforcement Vehicle Operations (LEVO) Training if assignment includes driving an agency vehicle. Use of agency vehicle requires appropriate driving history and passing agency biennial driver’s physical exam.
- Ability to conduct routine maintenance on vehicles and perform road calls on agency vehicles.
- Ability to evaluate vehicles, diagnose driver’s concerns, and determine services or repairs needed. Perform maintenance on a variety of vehicles and specialty equipment, including motorcycles, trainers, generators, etc.
- Ability to adjust, clean, repair, replace, and install defective, missing, and/or damaged components for gas and diesel vehicles and related equipment. Perform maintenance on computerized engines, transmissions, brakes, fuel, ignitions, drivelines, and electronic systems.
- Ability to install accessories and equipment in agency vehicles, including lights, cages, two-way radio systems, radar devices, drivecams, trailer hitches, generators, and recording devices. Install and remove vehicle wrap, decals, and window tints.
- Ability to repair and replace tires on agency vehicles. Conduct a balance assessment on tires.
- Ability to perform general clerical duties, including typing, maintaining daily vehicle logs, and documenting monthly vehicle consumptions.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to present information and respond to questions from senior management and agency personnel.
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
- Advanced knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance.
Depending on certifications, may be required to perform additional duties, such as:
- Evaluate and repair hybrid vehicles, including battery and generator components.
- Diagnose and repair electrical wiring related to vehicle electronic systems.

Auto Technician (Mechanic):
- High school diploma or GED AND two (2) years related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary Range: $39,145/yr - $60,153/yr.
Auto Technician I (Mechanic I):
- High school diploma or GED AND two (2) years related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have two (2) current National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
Salary Range: $41,142/yr - $63,169/yr.
Auto Technician II (Mechanic II):
- High school diploma or GED AND two (2) years related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have four (4) current ASE certifications.
Salary Range: $43,160/yr - $66,331/yr.
Auto Technician III (Mechanic III):
- High school diploma or GED AND two (2) years related experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have eight (8) current ASE certifications.
Salary Range: $47,632/yr - $73,174/yr.
Additional Information
Physical Demands: While performing duties, employee must stand, walk, talk, hear, smell, handle or feel with hands, reach with arms. Frequently sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally climb or balance. Must lift up to 50 pounds regularly and more than 100 pounds occasionally. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment: Exposure to fumes, chemicals, weather, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and occasional bodily fluids. Work is performed in a vehicle maintenance workshop with loud noise levels.
