Base pay range

$20.00/yr - $23.00/yr

Role Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations and solving problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

Automotive Service Workers (ASWs), under supervision, assist in and perform automotive maintenance services, inspection, and repair work. They operate motor vehicles such as passenger cars, ambulances, hearses, trucks, wreckers, forklifts, tractor-trailer trucks, and sign-erecting trucks. They tow and relocate vehicles for auction, disconnect vehicle batteries, and perform various automotive maintenance services and repairs. They also clean vehicles, assist in loading and unloading materials, operate motor equipment, and manage tools, supplies, and materials.

Typical Tasks Include
  • Performing automotive maintenance such as preventive maintenance, inspection, battery service, tire changes, lubrication, and oil changes.
  • Cleaning and polishing vehicles, both interior and exterior.
  • Dispensing gasoline and oil, checking and refilling vehicle fluids.
  • Assisting in repairs and replacements of engine parts, drive trains, transmissions, and other systems.
  • Operating motor vehicles for testing repairs and transporting vehicles.
  • Maintaining vehicle records and inventories.
Minimum Qualifications
For Level I Assignments
  • Two years of full-time experience in automotive maintenance, or
  • Graduation from a trade high school, vocational, or technical school in automotive maintenance, or
  • An Associate Degree in automotive technology, or
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, with six months credited per year of relevant education.
License Requirements

All candidates must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Driver License in New York. Certain positions require a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with specific endorsements. Candidates may qualify with a Learner's Permit and must obtain the full license within 180 days of appointment.

Additional Information

This position is open to qualified persons with disabilities through the 55-a Program. Residency in New York City is generally required within 90 days of appointment, with some exceptions for city employees.
