Job summary

County of Kauaʻi is seeking an Automotive Mechanic I to perform journey-level inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of light gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. The role operates within the Department of Public Works Auto Maintenance Repair Shop and requires a strong hands-on mechanical background.

The position is civil service with a full range of duties including diagnosis, repair, preventive maintenance, and occasional field work.

Qualifications

• A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and three and one half (3 ½) years of experience repairing motor vehicle and equipment as a helper or under a journey level mechanic or successful completion of apprenticeship training.

Responsibilities

• Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, repairs, and overhauls light gasoline and diesel-powered motor vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnoses, disassembles, repairs, and reassembles equipment parts for cars, trucks, and light equipment.
• Overhauls and repairs motorized equipment parts by changing pistons and rings, grinding and refacing valves and seats.
• Changes clutch, bushing, timing gear and seal; overhauls water pumps; changes spark plugs and repairs generator and starter motor.
• Overhauls and checks carburetor, fuel pumps and oil pump; repairs transmission, gears, seals, and fork.
• Repairs hydraulic systems, brake systems, steering, fuel lines; performs minor electrical repairs; may weld and perform body/fender work.
• Road tests vehicles after repair; may provide guidance to lower-level mechanics and assist heavier equipment mechanics when needed.

Job Summary

Performs full range of journey-level inspections, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of light gasoline and diesel-powered motor vehicles and equipment independently; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, repairs, and overhauls light gasoline and diesel-powered motor vehicles and equipment. Diagnoses, dissembles, repairs, and reassembles equipment parts for cars, trucks, and other light equipment; Overhauls and repairs motorized equipment parts by changing pistons and rings, grinding and refacing valves and seats; Changes clutch, bushing, timing gear and seal; Overhauls water pumps; Changes spark plugs, replaces, and adjusts points, and repairs generator and starter motor; Overhauls and checks carburetor, fuel pumps and oil pump; Repairs transmission by changing gears, seals, and fork; Repairs universal gears, axle wheels, studs, bearings, and seals; Repairs brake and hydraulic systems; Repairs steering assemblies and fuel lines; Solders radiators and fuel tanks; Performs minor automotive electrical repairs; Changes or repairs fuel injectors; Occasionally performs welding and body and fender repair work; Road tests vehicles and equipment after being repaired; May perform troubleshooting repair work in the field as assigned; Submits equipment repair reports; May provide guidance and training to lower-level mechanics; May assist the Heavy Vehicle and Construction Equipment Mechanic I in the repair of heavy equipment when necessary; and Performs other related duties as required.

Selection Process Overview

For civil service positions, applicants will be evaluated based on the content of their applications and depending on the position, may require additional assessments such as a written examination, performance examination or evidence of a valid driver’s license before being placed on an eligible list for that class of work. Depending on your ranking on the eligible list, you may be invited to participate in the remainder of the selection process. For non-civil service positions, applicants do not have to meet minimum qualification requirements. Oral Interviews are conducted with a panel of interviewers and if you are selected for an interview you will be contacted by the hiring department. Employment references will be conducted for the final applicant. After offer, depending on the position, other requirements such as criminal background check, physical examination, and drug testing may be required.

What is an eligible list? Applicants for civil service positions who meets the minimum qualification requirements are placed on an eligible list which will be used by departments to fill a vacant position for that class of work. An applicant will remain on an eligible list for 6 months.
