WORK SCHEDULE FOR THIS POSITION:
MONDAY - THURSDAY: 6:00AM - 4:30PM
Under general supervision of the senior mechanic, performs diagnosis, maintenance, repairs of various automotive systems on automobiles, trucks, street sweepers, graders, tractors and other power driven and mechanical equipment; proper record keeping of work tasks; conducts general cleanliness and organizing tasks in the shop, drives various pieces of City Equipment, vehicles and other duties as required.

Inspect motorized and mechanical equipment; perform preventive maintenance inspections, diagnose problems and determine the extent of repairs necessary; make adjustments, repairs, overhauls on diesel, gasoline and alternative fuel engines; manual and automatic transmissions and differentials; install new or rebuilt engines; adjust or replace components as needed; adjust pistons rings and bearings; fuel injection components, carburetors, fuel pumps, filters, fuel lines and gauges; rewire and reconditions electrical systems; test and repairs starters and magnetos; checks and recharge batteries and air conditioning systems; repair and replace other components such as alternators, distributors, relays, lights and switches ; hydraulic brake components, brake vacuum booster; radiators, water pumps and hoses; replace cooling fan assemblies; install axles; repair automotive equipment bodies/components; steam clean parts and equipment; use electric and oxyacetylene welding outfits and cutting torches to braze and weld; perform basic machine shop work; minor fabrication of construction and maintenance equipment; keep accurate records of time, materials, parts and work performed.
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:
Education and/or Experience: High School Graduate or equivalent, plus major course work in auto mechanics, automotive diagnostics, rebuild and repair and/or machine shop and welding from a specialized trade school or college level course work is desirable. Automotive Standards of Excellence (ASE) Certification completed in one or more specific fields is desirable. Three years of automotive mechanic experience in the repair of automobiles and power driver equipment in a private or a public sector.
Knowledge of: Tools, equipment and procedures used in the adjustment, repair, and overhaul of motor equipment; engine, fuel, ignition, electrical, hydraulic and cooling system and their repair and adjustments; knowledge of operation and care of diesels, gasoline and alternative fuel engines, equipment chassis and parts; knowledge of basic safety and environmental issues needed to operate equipment properly and safely.
Ability to: Investigate and diagnose various vehicle operation problems; make appropriate mechanical repairs to a variety of city owned equipment; operate equipment and machine shop tools, such as lathes, drills, presses, grinders, reamers and brake lathers; operate oxyacetylene and electric welding equipment; read and understand vehicle manufacture manuals and schematics.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required. Must obtain a California Class B driver's license within one year of appointment and must be able to maintain such license throughout City employment.
Physical DemandsAbility to lift up to 40 pounds or more; drive a wide variety of motor vehicles; operate machinery using arms and legs; bend in all directions; squeeze with arms and hands; and get from one location to another in the course of doing business.
Work EnvironmentEmployee generally works in a shop environment, with some travel from site to site. Employee will be exposed to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, or potentially hazardous chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually high and the employee may be exposed to loud talking and frequent interruptions from telephones, City staff, and/or members of the public. The nature of the work also requires incumbents to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
