Job description

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of highly skilled and complex tasks to restore and paint damaged bodies on a wide variety of motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Straightens, restores or replaces damaged vehicle and equipment sections.
  • Uses a wide variety of hand tools and operates power equipment such as metal benders, metal sheers, punch equipment, drills, grinders, sanders, air cutters, welding and cutting torches, and paint accessories.
  • Adjusts body closures, seats and seat tracks;
  • Fabricates sheet metal panels, brackets and supports;
  • Performs body sheet metal re-sectioning operations and straightens sheet metal;
  • Makes fiberglass body repairs and aligns frames;
  • Replaces frame sections and cross members.
  • Writes estimates for repair of damaged vehicles to include cost of parts and labor.
  • Functions as a lead-worker and acts in the absence of the section supervisor.

Note: This position is classified as essential. The appointee is required to report to work during times of inclement weather or other emergencies. The work hours for this position will be day shift (5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.); position is located at the Newington Maintenance Facility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus five years of experience in the body repair and painting of damaged motor vehicles. Related automotive body repair education or trade training above the high school level may be substituted for experience on an hour for hour basis.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid Driver's License
  • A valid Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) or a valid Commercial Driver s License (CDL) Class B is required within 30 days of an offer. Applicants hired with a CDL Permit must obtain a CDL B within eleven months of hire date.
  • Commercial Driver's License (Class B) VA

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possess current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification(s); OR completion of the I-CAR Professional Development Program (PDP) for Collision Repair Professionals.
  • Three years or more of experience in the body repair and painting of damaged motor vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain effective public and employee relationships.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the restoration and painting of damaged motor vehicles;
  • Ability to use a wide variety of tools in the repair and painting of damaged motor vehicles;
  • Ability to keep detailed records;
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions and accepted trade practices, processes, and procedures while completing assignments.
  • Currently possess personal tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to: lift 50 lbs on an average of once daily; stoop, bend, twist, and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively; use creeper or get on hands and knees several times daily. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
