Job summary

Owens Corning is seeking an Automation and Electrical Controls Engineer to lead safety-driven automation maintenance at the Blythewood facility. The role drives improvements in safety, productivity, quality, and cost while supporting maintenance teams and operations.

The engineer will develop training, lead electrical and control system enhancements, and ensure reliable power and control architectures across the plant. Strong PLC/HMI skills and SAP PM experience are valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent training, knowledge and experience.
  • Three years of experience in controls or electrical engineering.
  • Strong safety awareness and leadership.
  • Must have strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution from 25.5 kV to 480V.
  • Knowledge of 3-Phase AC motor theory and Rockwell systems.

Job description

The Automation and Electrical Controls Engineer is responsible for overall Automation and Electrical Maintenance Operationsat the Blythewood manufacturing facility. They are responsible for all aspects of the electrical maintenance processes,and use engineering skills to drive improvements in safety, productivity, and quality, while reducing costs.

Reports To: Maintenance Leader

Span of Control : Supports all technical, manufacturing, and quality processes

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
LEAD SAFETY FOR AN INJURY FREE WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Follow and enforce all safety rules, regulations, procedures, training, and initiatives
  • Adhere to and continuously improve all Plant and position-specific safety policies, procedures, and standards
  • Ensure a safe, clean and environmentally compliant work environment
  • Build a culture where safety is a top priority
  • Educate team members on safe maintenance work processes and procedures
  • Effectively communicate Owens Corning’s standard of safety with external parties and ensures that they work according to our safety standards
  • Lead Electrical Safety SIF program, such as arc flash, ensuring all equipment conforms to electrical codes, breaker testing and switchgear cleaning
DEVELOPING TALENT
  • Develop and execute training plans for maintenance personnel
  • Create a continuous learning environment for employees
  • Co-lead with Maintenance Lead to coach primary maintenance workforce and drives their engagement

  • Train maintenance technicians and operators on proper maintenance and troubleshooting
LEADING AUTOMATIONS MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS
Troubleshoot and Repair
  • Support Plant Maintenance and Operations teams in system and equipment troubleshooting and repair
  • Troubleshoot electrical and automation problems with the use of computers, PLC’s, voltage meters, current meters, oscilloscopes and electrical formulas
  • Provide technical support to all operating and maintenance departments to troubleshoot and diagnose issues related to PLC and HMI programs
Maintenance and Reliability
  • Identify and capture opportunities for reliability, performance, quality and cost improvements
  • Improve the reliability of the plant power and control systems through implementation of preventative and predictive maintenance
  • Develop and execute Preventive and Predictive Maintenance programs using SAP
  • Ensure routine electrical maintenance of plant equipment is completed properly and on schedule
  • Lead and support Escalations, Root Cause Analysis and Break Down Analysis processes
  • Work closely with the Operation Department in a team-based environment to ensure continuously improving machine performance
  • Develop, implement and monitor automation and control strategies and system architecture for the facility.
  • Provide electrical, controls, automation and network support for equipment, process, quality and utility operations
  • Be the Site Electrical expert for all voltages between 5VDC to 25.5 kV
  • Support and adhere to the Reliability Work Process (RWP) for work planning and scheduling
  • Continually develop and maintain a complete set of as-built electrical and controls documentation; including automation device data base (HMI’s, VFD’s, PLC’s, IP addresses, etc.)
Project Engineering and Management
  • Identify opportunities for equipment or process modification, equipment replacement, or application of new technology that will enhance operations, quality and maintenance processes
  • Improve the reliability of the plant power and control systems through capital investments
  • Develop and implement cost savings, waste minimization, productivity improvements and other process optimization through a partnership with the site’s maintenance and operation teams
  • Lead assigned capital projects for the Blythewood facility in partnership with Maintenance Leader/team
  • Review designs by others and ensure adherence to strategies and Owens Corning specifications
  • Assist Corporate Engineering and Plant engineering with Automation projects
  • Lead and Support Plant TPM Initiatives and Projects
  • Adherence to Management of Change (MOC) process
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent training, knowledge, and experience
  • Three years of experience in controls or electrical engineering
  • Strong safety awareness, commitment and safety leadership
  • Must have strong troubleshooting skills
  • Knowledge of electrical power distribution from 25.5 kV down to 480V
  • Knowledge of 3-Phase AC motor theory
  • Knowledge of Rockwell drive systems and Allen-Bradley PLCs
  • Be responsive to the needs of the plant (will be on call) - Availability to work nights, weekend as required for operational support
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE :
  • Automation and controls engineering experience in manufacturing, corporate engineering, or related environment
  • Electrical and Controls Design Engineering experience
  • Strong knowledge of control systems and design
  • Working knowledge of Allen Bradley PLC’s PanelView HMIs, Ignition HMIs, Rockwell PowerFlex AC drives and servo drives and motors
  • Data Historian experience (Ignition and/or IP21 platforms)
  • Equipment evaluation and selection experience
  • Ability to write procedures
  • Expertise in safety systems
  • General knowledge of TPM and maintenance processes
  • SAP PM Module and Fiori
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of database systems (SQL)
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills
  • Capable of developing Maintenance Technicians’ skills
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in 3-phase AC motors and motor control centers (MCCs), power distribution systems (to 25.5 kV AC), Servo drive systems, Allen-Bradley PLCs and Rockwell VFDs
  • Good knowledge of NEC, OSHA, ANSI, NFPA 70 and 70E standards, including Arc Flash
  • Have a drive for positive results
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) to effectively communicate with people across all levels of the organization
