Job Description
PURPOSE
Automation Technicians will support Project Managers and System Engineers in creating, installing, and commissioning PLC/HMI/SCADA systems, as well as network and device integration work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are typical for this job. These are not to be exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Complete start-up and commissioning of new PLC/HMI/SCADA control systems, and perform service and maintenance on existing installations, including fault diagnosis, hardware repairs, programming bug fixes, and alterations on customer sites.
- Diagnose and resolve technical problems on job sites and report findings to Project Management or Operations Leaders via email, SharePoint, OneDrive, or other repositories.
- Participate in project kickoff and turnover meetings with Project Managers to understand project scope, estimates, and finalize project completion documentation.
- Organize and maintain control submittal project redlines; submit to design engineers at project conclusion for as-built drawing package creation.
- Collaborate with other technicians to develop and share technical solutions.
- Engage in technician training to stay updated on new products, tools, and integration methods through continuing education initiatives.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s degree in Robotics, Automation, Technology, or related field, or 3-5 years of experience with PLC/HMI control systems in lieu of degree.
- Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field is also acceptable.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of at least one PLC software (e.g., Rockwell Suite, Modicon Unity Pro, Control Expert, Mitsubishi).
- Knowledge of at least one HMI software (e.g., Rockwell FactoryTalk View, Wonderware InTouch).
- Knowledge of SCADA platforms (e.g., Ignition, Factory Talk View SE, GE iFix).
- Familiarity with Windows Office applications and repositories (e.g., OneDrive, SharePoint, GIT).
- Understanding of Ethernet and serial network communications and hardware configurations.
- Basic understanding of process controls (e.g., PID control loops, motor control, digital and analog measurement device commissioning).
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to travel to customer locations, approximately 25% overnight travel.
ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY
- Prolonged sitting at a desk working on a computer.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds occasionally.
- Fieldwork involving client interactions on construction sites, requiring standing, walking, and climbing stairs.
- Occasional exposure to various weather conditions.
