MMPA is seeking a hands-on and strategic Automation Project Manager to lead plant-wide automation initiatives, focusing on the implementation, upgrade, and integration of control systems across our processing and packaging operations. This role is ideal for an individual with a strong background in industrial automation, process control, and project leadership in a manufacturing setting.

You will manage automation projects from concept to commissioning, working closely with operations, maintenance, and external partners to ensure systems are efficient, reliable, and compliant with safety and regulatory standards.

The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA), established in 1916, is a dairy farmer-owned and operated milk marketing cooperative and dairy processor. As the 10th largest dairy cooperative in the U.S., we proudly serve dairy farmers across Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Indiana. With a workforce of around 625 employees spread across four states, MMPA is deeply rooted in the dairy industry. We operate multiple facilities, including the Middlebury Cheese Company in Indiana, Superior Dairy in Ohio, and two SQF Level 3 dairy ingredient plants in Michigan. Our product lineup includes fluid milk, cheese, ultra-filtered milk, ice cream, butter, nonfat dry milk, cream, and condensed skim milk.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the planning, budgeting, and execution of automation and controls projects across multiple facilities.
  • Implement and upgrade PLC/HMI systems, SCADA platforms, and plant control networks, primarily using Allen Bradley (Logix 5000, CompactLogix, ControlLogix).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and OEMs to develop automated solutions for batching, separation, pasteurization, packaging, and CIP systems.
  • Support system commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous optimization of automated processes.
  • Ensure all automation systems meet FDA, PMO, OSHA, MIOSHA/IOSHA, and Sanitary Design requirements.
  • Manage project documentation, system drawings, and compliance records.
  • Train plant teams on newly implemented or modified systems.
  • Proactively identify and resolve automation risks or inefficiencies.

What We’re Looking For:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Industrial Automation, or related field. Equivalent experience considered.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years managing industrial automation or controls projects in manufacturing (food or dairy preferred).
  • Strong experience with PLC/HMI systems (Allen Bradley required).
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems, industrial networks (Ethernet/IP), and instrumentation.
  • Experience managing contractors and system integrators on automation projects.

Technical Skills:
