Job summary

Formic is seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer in the Chicago area to own the mechanical design, documentation, and floor commissioning of electromechanical systems. You will drive concept through release for EOAT, pallets, conveyors, and material handling on our automation platforms.

You will work hands-on on the shop floor, collaborate with software and project engineering teams, and help scale automation across North America, ensuring reliability, manufacturability, and fast deployment.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of mechanical design experience in automation or robotics.
• Experience owning designs from concept through manufacturing release.
• Strong 3D CAD skills, especially SolidWorks.
• Familiarity with robotic systems integration and EOAT design.
• Willingness to work on-site in Chicago area and travel up to 25%.

Responsibilities

• Own mechanical design of automation systems from concept through release.
• Design, prototype, assemble, and test automated end-of-line systems using SolidWorks 3D CAD.
• Maintain SolidWorks model structures, release processes, and BOMs.
• Create detailed mechanical design documentation, drawings, and SOPs.
• Lead EOAT design and floor integration for build, integration, and commissioning.
• Troubleshoot and optimize mechanical systems across floor deployments.
• Support DFMA and DFA practices with internal and external resources.
• Prepare weekly progress reports and coordinate with cross-functional teams.
