Job summary

Thorlabs in Newton, NJ is seeking an Automation-Machining Technician I to advance the machine shop’s ongoing transition to fully automated production. You will develop, implement, and maintain automation solutions to improve productivity and reliability.

The role requires hands-on toolmaking and manual machining skills, with experience on Haas 3-axis CNC mills, and collaboration with Engineering and Production teams to meet quality and throughput goals.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in a similar position preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; CNC certification a major plus.
  • Strong blueprint reading and geometric tolerancing knowledge.
  • Proficient computer skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to shift between tasks to meet production priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot robotic and automated CNC equipment.
  • Machining new and repairing tooling fixtures for automation.
  • Program and optimize robotic systems and automation cells.
  • Design, fabricate, and maintain automation tooling and fixtures.
  • Investigate and resolve equipment malfunctions.
  • Collaborate with Process Improvement and Production teams to improve throughput, quality, and labor utilization.
  • Inspect machined components for accuracy per drawings.
  • Perform general housekeeping and preventive maintenance.

This position is responsible for advancing and supporting the Machine Shop’s ongoing transition to fully automated production machining across both existing and new product lines. The Automation-Machining Technician I will play a key role in developing, implementing, and maintaining automation solutions that improve productivity, consistency, and manufacturing efficiency.

The ideal candidate will possess strong toolmaking and manual machining skills, with demonstrated proficiency in operating manual mills, lathes, and grinders, as well as Haas 3-axis CNC milling machines. This individual will be responsible for designing, building, modifying, troubleshooting, and repairing production tooling and fixturing required to support fully automated manufacturing processes. This role requires a hands-on problem solver who can collaborate with Engineering and Production teams to develop robust automation solutions that meet quality, throughput, and reliability objectives.

Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot robotic and automated manufacturing equipment used in CNC machining environments.
  • Responsible for machining new and repairing tooling fixtures to support automated production CNCmachines.
  • Program, adjust, and optimize robotic systems, automation cells, and associated peripherals to maximize efficiency and reliability.
  • Design, fabricate, and maintain automation tooling, fixtures, and work holding solutions.
  • Investigate and resolve equipment malfunctions, process interruptions, and automation-related issues.
  • Collaborate with Process Improvement and Production teams to identify opportunities for improved throughput, quality, and labor utilization.
  • Monitors and inspect machined components for accuracy in accordance with specified drawing standards.
  • Responsible for general housekeeping in the work area, which includes preventative maintenance on the CNC machines.

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures and Safety.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities: Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally. While performing the duties, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Some employees may come into contact with potentially harmful chemicals or fumes, but ventilation systems normally minimize any harmful effects, and the work areas may be noisy at times.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 -10 years of experience in a similar position preferred plus.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or equivalent work experience
  • CNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plus

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of blueprint reading and geometric tolerancing, a plus.
  • Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient computer skills is a must
  • Ability to work well in a group atmosphere, with minimal supervision and comply with high quality standards.
  • Ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.

Hourly pay range for this position is $27.00 - $31.00 per hour depending on experience
