Job summary

Thorlabs in Newton, NJ is seeking a CNC Machinist to set up and operate production equipment, read blueprints, and meet tight tolerances. Ideal candidates have 3–5 years of CNC experience, a High School Diploma or equivalent, and CNC certification is a major plus.

Familiarity with Haas and Fanuc controls, plus a lean manufacturing mindset, is preferred. This role offers a 3:45pm–12:15am shift with shift differential and a sign-on bonus, along with opportunities for growth and a comprehensive

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of experience in a similar position preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience.
  • CNC certification or CNC Trade School is a major plus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs set ups on CNC production equipment such as milling and turning.
  • Machines and fabricates precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries.
  • Reads blueprints and geometric tolerances; demonstrates understanding of GD&T.
  • Shows strong programming and machine operation knowledge.
  • Understands material properties and special machining requirements.
  • Inspects/ measures finished parts for conformance to specs.
  • Completes routine and priority tasks to ensure on-time deliveries.
  • Maintains safe, clean, organized workspace and performs basic maintenance.

Responsible for set-up and operation of CNC machines in compliance with inch and metric drawing specifications. Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools and devices used in inspection of all components. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

The hours for this position are 3:45pm - 12:15am Monday - Friday. This position is eligible for a shift differential as well as a sign on bonus.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
  • Performs set ups on various CNC Production Equipment such as milling, turning or similar operations.
  • Machines and/or fabricating precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries based on specifications.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design and dimensioning principles which includes reading blueprints and geometric tolerances comprehension.
  • Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in programming and overall machine operation.
  • Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements.
  • Measures, inspects and troubleshoots dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Completes routine and priority tasks defined by management to ensure on time deliveries.
  • Performs periodic machine maintenance such as but not limited to dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts.
  • Comply with safety regulations and maintains a clean and orderly workspace

In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job‑related equipment and tools

Experience:
  • 3-5 years of experience in a similar position preferred
Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience
  • CNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plus
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience with Haas and Fanuc controls.
  • Understanding of Virtual Gibbs and manual programming (G codes/M codes).
  • Familiar with the operation of DNC systems.
  • Setup Time Reduction a plus
  • Prototyping experience a plus
  • Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills
  • Communication skills
  • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards.
  • Knowledge of Lean Principles including “Just in Time”, and Setup Time Reduction a plus

Pay range for this position is $29.00 - $40.00 depending on experience
