Job summary

Smith & Wesson is seeking a Manufacturing Automation Engineer to join our advanced manufacturing team in Springfield, MA. The role focuses on improving CNC machining and manual operations through robotics, integration, and process control.

You will program and troubleshoot PLCs and HMI systems, collaborate with integrators and engineering teams, and drive capital projects across the organization. A strong CNC background and Lean/Six Sigma knowledge are preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering is required.
• 5+ years in manufacturing automation, preferably CNC environments.
• Thorough understanding of CNC machining processing incl. G-code and macro programming.
• Experience with robotic machine tending and automation tool adjustments.
• Experience maintaining PLC, HMI and automation system controls.
• Experience with SPC for CNC process control is preferred.
• Knowledge of CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks/Mastercam preferred).
• Experience with MES or data acquisition systems preferred.

Responsibilities

• Be a primary technical expert on identifying the latest manufacturing technologies benefiting processes.
• Identify opportunities to apply advanced manufacturing principles for safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
• Gather process information to create project scope and support integrators.
• Provide technical insight to ensure process requirements are considered.
• Evaluate integrator solutions and capabilities for new processes.
• Coordinate with internal stakeholders and present final project proposals for alignment.
• Turn proposals into capital projects with detailed plans and budgets.
• Understand complex part drawings and design intent to guide projects.
• Develop deep process understanding and gain agreement on new processes.
