Job Summary
Working on both projects and bid proposals, the Automation Engineer is responsible for the execution of automation systems and related tasks. The role includes developing solutions that meet proposal or project requirements, ensuring design outputs align with schedule and quality standards, providing technical support during project and bid lifecycles, and delivering aftermarket support on a 24/7 basis up to one week per month with potential travel.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop automation design architecture diagrams and select hardware/software.
- Specify control philosophy, software structure, functional and detailed design.
- Write PLC software code, network and communication configuration, HMI and SCADA applications.
- Interface with MIS/MES, ERP systems and other industrial control systems.
- Complete design calculations (e.g., tag estimation) and prepare documentation (FDS, DDS, SFC).
- Perform software simulation, FAT, CAT and ensure delivery within project schedule and budget.
- Own solution design, ensuring compliance with safety, legislation, customer requirements and best practices.
- Participate in safety and environment reviews, risk assessments, and design reviews.
- Facilitate technical discussions with customers and suppliers and attend project meetings.
- Support installation, commissioning and hand‑over of records to the aftermarket team.
- Assist sales and proposals by attending pre‑contact meetings, performing feasibility studies and reviewing quotation text.
- Provide general technical support to the wider engineering community and participate in continuous‑improvement initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Fluent in English (spoken and written); Spanish language skills preferred.
- Strong communication, analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Experience with Rockwell Studio5000; preferred experience with Siemens SimaticNET and TIA Portal.
- Proficient with Wonderware InTouch and Microsoft Excel; advantage in C++, C#, Visual Studio.
- Capability to manage multiple tasks within a matrixed environment and collaborate across distributed teams.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Industrial Automation or related engineering discipline.
- Automation execution experience in food, beverage, pharmaceutical or other hygienic industries.
- Understanding of control requirements for hygienic processes (e.g., pasteurisation, CIP).
- Experience leading a technically oriented team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Knowledge of Siemens and Rockwell programming environments and Wonderware SCADA.
- SAP experience is an advantage.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
This is an office‑based role with significant computer use. Travel to SPX locations and customer sites up to approximately 40% of the time is required. Reasonable accommodations will be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Salary Range
Anticipated salary range: $82,400 / yr to $114,500 / yr.
