Job summary

Pentangle Tech Services | P5 Group is seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to support the development and completion of a medical device assembly machine in the Chicagoland area. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLC programming and FANUC 6-axis robot programming expertise, with a track record of integrating complete automated machinery.

Qualifications

• 5–7+ years of automation/controls engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLC programming.
• Strong hands-on FANUC robot programming.
• Experience with FANUC 6-axis robots.
• Experience with machine integration and commissioning.
• Experience troubleshooting automated machinery and controls systems.
• Hands-on with a complete automated machine.

Responsibilities

• Program and troubleshoot Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLCs and automation systems.
• Develop, modify, and optimize programs for FANUC 6-axis robots.
• Use FANUC RoboGuide for robot programming, simulation, offline development.
• Integrate two FANUC robots into a complete medical device assembly machine.
• Perform machine integration, startup, commissioning, debugging, and optimization.
• Troubleshoot PLC, robot, I/O, motion, sensors, and other automation issues.
• Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to meet performance requirements.
• Review electrical schematics and machine documentation during integration.
• Assist with final machine completion, validation, and handoff.
• Identify and resolve controls and automation issues to meet project deadlines.
• Support the project from October through early January.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to support the development and completion of a medical device assembly machine in the Chicagoland area. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLC programming and FANUC 6-axis robot programming, along with experience integrating complete automated machinery.

This position will be heavily focused on PLC and robotic programming, machine integration, troubleshooting, and commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

• Program and troubleshoot Rockwell Allen-Bradley PLCs and associated automation systems.
• Develop, modify, and optimize programs for FANUC 6-axis robots.
• Utilize FANUC RoboGuide for robot programming, simulation, and offline development.
• Support the integration of two FANUC robots into a complete medical device assembly machine.
• Perform machine integration, startup, commissioning, debugging, and optimization.
• Troubleshoot PLC, robot, I/O, motion, sensors, and other automation-related issues.
• Work with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure the machine meets functional and performance requirements.
• Review electrical schematics and machine documentation during integration and troubleshooting.

Required Skills & Experience

• 5–7+ years of automation/controls engineering experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLC programming.
• Strong hands-on experience with FANUC robot programming.
• Experience programming FANUC 6-axis robots.
• Experience with FANUC RoboGuide.
• Proven experience with machine integration and commissioning.
• Experience troubleshooting automated machinery and controls systems.
• Ability to work hands-on with a complete automated machine.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Experience with EPLAN or the ability to navigate electrical schematics.
• Experience in medical device manufacturing or assembly automation.
• Experience with machine builders, robotic assembly systems, or complex automated equipment.
• Experience with electrical controls, I/O, sensors, safety systems, and industrial communication networks.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on Controls/Automation Engineer who can independently handle Allen-Bradley PLC programming + FANUC robot programming and has enough machine-integration experience to take a robotic assembly system through debugging, commissioning, and completion.
