Responsibilities

  • Design and support automation systems integrating mechanical components, PLC controls, sensors, robotics, conveyors, and pneumatic systems.
  • Design tooling, fixtures, work-holding devices, machine improvements, and automated equipment using 3D CAD software.
  • Support automation projects from concept to installation, commissioning, validation, and production support.
  • Evaluate automation opportunities with technical studies, cost analyses, and ROI calculations.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment and conduct root-cause investigations of mechanical and automation systems.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, Production, and Safety teams to implement process improvements.

About the Role

Our client is seeking an Automation Engineer to join their manufacturing team in Bluffton, Indiana. This is a hands-on engineering opportunity for someone who enjoys designing equipment, solving technical problems, improving manufacturing processes, and bringing automation solutions to life. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and manufacturing professionals to design, implement, troubleshoot, and continuously improve the equipment and automation systems used throughout the production environment. Responsibilities
  • Design and support automation systems integrating mechanical components, PLC controls, sensors, robotics, conveyors, and pneumatic systems.
  • Design tooling, fixtures, work-holding devices, machine improvements, and automated equipment using 3D CAD software.
  • Support automation and equipment projects from concept development through installation, commissioning, validation, and production support.
  • Evaluate opportunities for automation by conducting technical studies, equipment comparisons, cost analyses, and ROI calculations.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing equipment and participate in root-cause investigations involving mechanical and automation systems.
  • Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, Production, and Safety teams to implement process improvements.
  • Work with equipment vendors on specifications, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), installation, and equipment acceptance.
  • Develop engineering documentation including drawings, work instructions, technical reports, equipment specifications, and project documentation.
  • Help ensure equipment meets company safety standards, OSHA requirements, and applicable engineering best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, ergonomics, and cost reduction.
  • Stay current with emerging manufacturing and automation technologies and participate in technical training and industry events as appropriate.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience supporting manufacturing operations, automation projects, or mechanical equipment design.
Required Skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or similar.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, industrial controls, sensors, and electrical systems.
  • Experience with mechanical equipment, fixtures, conveyors, robotics, automated machinery, or production equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and continuous improvement principles.
  • Comfortable working hands-on in a manufacturing environment, including equipment installation, troubleshooting, and startup activities.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering projects and priorities.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working with industrial robots such as ABB, KUKA, or Yaskawa.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of machine vision, servo motion, pneumatics, hydraulics, and machine safety.
  • Experience supporting capital equipment installations or manufacturing process improvement projects.
Pay range and compensation package

Salary: Up to $95,000 annually
