Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking an experienced Automation and Controls Specialist to join our Northeast team. You will design, program and commission control systems for Water/Wastewater clients, including P&IDs and detailed control descriptions to ensure safe, efficient operation.

The ideal candidate will develop client relationships, mentor junior staff and deliver quality technical products on time and on budget. Travel 20–40% and hybrid work are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree.
• 7 years of related experience.
• Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Responsibilities

• Develop automation solutions with senior level oversight and guidance.
• Program, test, and commission SCADA systems including Rockwell Studio 5000, Schneider Unity, GE iFix, Rockwell FactoryTalk, and AVEVA InTouch for System Platform.
• Configure SCADA servers, workstations, networks, and wireless communication systems (cellular, radio, Wi‑Fi).
• Develop SCADA reports using Dream Reports, XL Reporter, or Hach WIMS.
• Perform field acceptance testing (FATs) and field inspections to ensure conformance with contract requirements.
• Create basic to moderately complex P&IDs, control system architectures and descriptions for programming.
• Prepare control system preliminary design reports (PDRs).
• Review shop drawings of control components and wiring diagrams.
• Provide responses to RFIs under limited supervision.
• Develop Operations & Maintenance manuals for PLC and HMI programming.
• Prepare automation project budgets and construction cost estimates.
• Prepare proposals and client presentations under senior supervision.
• Travel to project sites for client meetings and start-up of control systems.
