Job summary

Amazon is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer to lead design reviews and develop robust control solutions for emerging automation and robotics across NA operations. You will shape control standards, collaborate with engineering and vendors, and ensure designs meet network and safety requirements.

Based in North America with travel to development sites across NA, this role focuses on scalability, maintainability, and long-term cost of ownership for next‑generation material handling systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related fields.
• 3+ years of experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms).
• 3+ years of automation controls engineering experience in manufacturing, logistics, automation, or industrial environments.
• Experience designing and implementing control systems for complex automated equipment.
• Experience managing programs across cross-functional teams and coordinating with engineering and operations.

Responsibilities

• Lead controls system design reviews for new automation and robotics technologies, identifying gaps against network standards and working with development teams to resolve them before deployment.
• Define and maintain control system standards, programming guidelines, and integration requirements — updating them as new technology types reveal gaps.
• Evaluate PLC, HMI, and SCADA implementations against network standards and safety requirements, providing input and recommending standards evolution.
• Partner with engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to represent control system requirements during design, pilot, and rollout phases.
• Review electrical schematics, control panel designs, and network architectures, providing feedback and updating business requirements where gaps are systemic.
• Investigate control system failures to identify root causes and drive solutions with development teams.
• Monitor control system performance metrics and drive improvements back into standards and readiness criteria.
• Identify overly complex or inconsistent architectures and drive simplification through updated standards.
