Reporting to the Controls Engineering Manager, the Automation Controls Engineer will be responsible for planning, designing, programming (HMI, PLC, robots), testing, startup, and commissioning of automated systems across various manufacturing industries from start to finish.
Responsibilities
- Operate in a team environment to meet or exceed customer expectations
- Participate in project reviews, completing all necessary project management documents to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget, aligned with customer expectations
- Research and stay current with the latest automation technologies
- Design electrical schematics and panel layouts for automated systems, including robotics integration
- Specify electrical components for procurement, working with vendors to ensure compliance with engineering and safety standards
- Program HMI’s, PLC’s, motion controls, and vision systems
- Develop offline robot programs using 3D simulation software
- Install and initialize robot software
- Set up robot user frames and verify offline programming, I/O, and logic
- Test and debug automated systems prior to customer acceptance, including onsite factory acceptance testing and commissioning
- Provide electrical controls and robotic programming training to customer personnel
- Document automated systems accurately
- Support customers’ automation systems remotely and onsite as needed
- Identify and develop new sales opportunities by building relationships with existing and potential customers and vendors
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- 3-5 years’ experience in automation design and programming
- Experience with Allen Bradley PLC and HMI controls
- Proficiency in 2D design tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Rockwell Studio 5000
- FANUC robot setup and programming experience, including Material Handling ROBOGUIDE, Welding WeldPRO, Painting PaintPro, CRX Collaborative, and Vision systems
- Experience with Octopuz 3D robot simulation is a plus
- Motivated team player with attention to detail
- Excellent communication and project management skills
- Ability to read electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics
- Ability to translate conceptual designs into functional equipment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Strong troubleshooting skills and safety-conscious thinking
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams
