Job summary

True Drilling LLC in Casper, Wyoming is seeking an Automation, Controls & Electrical Field Tech to join our on-site team. This full-time role supports equipment installations and upgrades across our rigs, with travel to all True Drilling sites.

You will maintain electronics, automation and measurement gear, troubleshoot PLCs and electrical systems, and contribute to safety and reliability on a 24/7 operation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with 2 years of specialized technical training and/or 5 years of industrial maintenance experience.
• Knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, servos, Ethernet and communication systems related to drilling rig automation.
• Ability to read P&ID diagrams, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical schematics for troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

• Provide support during equipment installations and upgrades.
• Maintain electronics, instruments, automation, and measurement equipment.
• Ensure vendors and contractors meet needs and expectations.
• Perform preventive maintenance per manufacturers or company instructions.
• Troubleshoot PLCs, data acquisition equipment, and electrical systems.
• Identify changes to improve rig performance using existing or new control systems.
• Response to downtime and maintain operations 24/7.
• Maintain safe and clean working environment and document actions.
• Assist other technicians with maintenance and safety training.
• Participate in safety trainings and programs.

What You'll Do:

• Provide support during equipment installations and upgrades including:
• Physically setting up and maintaining electronics, instruments, automation, and measurement equipment
• Ensuring vendors and contractors are meeting our needs and expectations
• Keep equipment operational, and ensure service quality, by:
• Completing preventive maintenance requirements following manufacturers or company instructions.
• Troubleshooting all electronic and data acquisition equipment, computers and PLCs. Adjust, repair or replace faulty components. Call for repairs when required and approved.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose problems and repair plant mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical systems using technical drawings (e.g., blueprints, electronic/mechanical schematics wiring diagrams, specifications, drawings, manuals, blueprints and engineering sketches.) and diagnostic tools (e.g. multi-meter, laptop).
• Identifying and correcting errors in programming and wiring.
• Identify and recommend changes to improve rig performance utilizing existing or new control systems;
• Make program modifications in PLC’s logic, HMI’s programs and servo controller logic to improve equipment performance.
• Respond quickly and aggressively to down time
• Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
• Conserve resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
• Document actions by completing appropriate production and quality forms, in a timely manner.
• Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed, communicate with multiple departments. Responsible for assisting other technicians with maintenance and repair duties; including training co-workers on safe and efficient techniques to maintain electrical system operations and equipment.
• Routinely performing safety observations and attending technical, developmental and safety trainings. Participate in the safety programs and/or committees; follow all site safety policies, company policies and procedures work safely and wear appropriate PPE.
• Obtain and maintain licenses, operator permits or certifications as required.
• Being on-call and responding to calls twenty-four/seven (24/7) for emergency response.
• Other duties as assigned

What We're Looking For:

Required Education, Experience and/or Abilities

• A high school diploma or equivalent education with two (2) years of specialized technical training and/or five (5) years of industrial maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
• Knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, Servos, Ethernet and communication systems as related to drilling rig automation
• Operational knowledge of an oscilloscope & multi-meter, soldering wires & connectors, operation of various crimping tools, wire stripping, ohm’s law, continuity testing, pinning out a military type connector, routing & tie wrapping cables, drilling & tapping holes, and building junction boxes.
• Ability to read and interpret P&ID drawings, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical schematics for use in system understanding and troubleshooting.

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Abilities

• A degree or certificate in electronics, automation, or control systems.
• Prior experience in hydraulics, pneumatics, HVAC, PLC, VFD, and electrical systems.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

• English language fluency, verbal and written.
• Acceptable results of a pre-employment background check and drug/alcohol test.
