Qualifications

Job description

The Automation and Embedded System Engineer role is a full-time, hybrid position responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining control and automation solutions for powered air compressors, fluid pumps, and power systems. Day-to-day tasks include developing and programming embedded control systems, configuring and optimizing PLCs, and integrating sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces.

You will analyze system performance, diagnose and resolve issues, and implement improvements to enhance reliability, efficiency, and safety in remote operations. The role also includes collaborating with cross-functional teams to define requirements, preparing technical documentation, supporting field deployment and commissioning, and providing remote troubleshooting and guidance for operations personnel.

What You'll Do

• Design, develop, and program embedded control systems for BMO's solar-powered air compressors, fluid pumps, and power management systems
• Configure, program, and optimize PLCs supporting compressor and pump control logic and automation sequences
• Integrate sensors (pressure, temperature, flow, and similar), actuators, and motor drives into control systems
• Build and maintain communication interfaces (e.g., cellular, satellite, or other remote telemetry) supporting field data collection — feeding both product performance monitoring and DOE/EPA grant reporting requirements
• Bench-test, field-test, and validate control systems for reliability in extreme, remote, off-grid environments
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues on deployed field units alongside the technical/ops team
• Document firmware, control logic, and system architecture for internal continuity and regulatory reporting needs

What You Bring

• 2–5 years of hands‑on experience in embedded systems, controls, or industrial automation engineering
• Skills in Process Control and Systems Engineering for designing, integrating, and optimizing automated systems
• Skills in Electrical Engineering and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) configuration and programming for hardware and control implementation
• Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing, analyzing, and resolving automation and embedded system issues in remote environments
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
• Experience with embedded software development (e.g., C/C++, IEC 61131-3 languages) and real-time control systems
• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (such as Modbus, CAN, Ethernet/IP) and sensor/actuator integration
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, system diagrams, and technical specifications, and to produce clear documentation
• Comfort working remotely, managing priorities independently, and collaborating effectively with distributed engineering and operations teams
• Ability to work hybrid, with regular onsite time on location for builds, testing, and field support

Bonus Points

• Experience in oil and gas or other industrial field environments, particularly with ruggedized equipment and remote monitoring solutions
• Familiarity with solar-powered or off-grid equipment deployments
• Experience with emissions reporting, DOE/EPA grant data collection, or environmental compliance workflows
• Background with predictive maintenance, edge computing, or telemetry platforms for remote industrial assets
• Comfort holding technical conversations about motors, solar power systems, and EPA emissions / pneumatic-venting regulations

Location: Hybrid; regular onsite time on location for builds, testing, and field support. Candidate must be based in CO or WY.
