Position Summary

The Automatic Gate Entry Systems Service Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading commercial automatic gate and access control systems.

This is a field-based position requiring strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage systems. The Service Technician responds to scheduled and emergency service calls, identifies system failures, completes repairs, and ensures automatic gate systems operate safely and reliably.

The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience troubleshooting gate operators, access control systems, safety devices, vehicle detection systems, and related entry equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair automatic sliding gates, swing gates, barrier arms, and pedestrian entry systems.
  • Troubleshoot gate operators, motors, gearboxes, control boards, limit systems, chains, belts, and mechanical components.
  • Diagnose electrical and low-voltage system failures.
  • Repair and replace gate operator components and associated hardware.
  • Troubleshoot card readers, keypads, telephone entry systems, intercoms, and access control devices.
  • Diagnose vehicle detection loops, loop detectors, photo eyes, safety edges, and other sensors.
  • Repair damaged wiring, connections, relays, power supplies, and control equipment.
  • Respond to emergency and priority gate service calls as required.
  • Perform system upgrades and equipment replacements.
  • Use multimeters and diagnostic tools to identify electrical and low-voltage issues.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, manufacturer manuals, and system documentation.
  • Troubleshoot AC/DC power, relays, inputs, outputs, control boards, and communication issues.
  • Identify whether failures are mechanical, electrical, access-control related, or caused by external equipment.
  • Determine appropriate repair recommendations and communicate findings clearly.
  • Escalate complex technical issues when necessary.
Preventative Maintenance
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on gate operators and entry systems.
  • Inspect chains, belts, rollers, hinges, bearings, wheels, tracks, hardware, and operator components.
  • Inspect and test safety devices and entrapment protection systems.
  • Lubricate and adjust mechanical components as required.
  • Test access control devices, vehicle detection systems, and operator functionality.
  • Identify potential failures before they result in system downtime.
  • Recommend repairs or upgrades based on equipment condition.
Customer Service
  • Communicate professionally with customers, property managers, facility personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Explain system problems and recommended repairs in clear terms.
  • Provide customers with status updates while on site.
  • Document additional repair opportunities and communicate recommendations to the appropriate internal team.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and customer-focused attitude.
Documentation
  • Accurately document service calls, troubleshooting performed, repairs completed, and parts used.
  • Capture photos and supporting documentation when required.
  • Complete work orders accurately and promptly.
  • Document recommended follow-up repairs and equipment replacement needs.
  • Ensure completed service calls are properly closed out and ready for billing.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain working knowledge of UL 325 and ASTM F2200 requirements for automated gate systems.
  • Inspect systems for potential entrapment and safety hazards.
  • Verify proper operation of monitored safety devices after repairs.
  • Follow electrical safety and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Maintain company tools, diagnostic equipment, inventory, and service vehicle.
Qualifications
  • 2–5+ years of experience servicing automatic gates, gate operators, access control systems, low-voltage systems, or related equipment preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities.
  • Working knowledge of automatic gate operator systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical and low-voltage circuits.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.
  • Experience with DoorKing, LiftMaster, HySecurity, FAAC, Nice, Viking Access, Linear, or similar equipment preferred.
  • Experience with access control, intercom, CCTV, networking, or telephone entry systems is a plus.
  • Understanding of UL 325 and ASTM F2200 standards preferred.
  • Welding and fabrication skills are a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to travel throughout the assigned service territory.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call or emergency service rotation when required.
