UM01 University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) is seeking an Auto Services Mechanic for the Department of Transportation Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing medium and heavy-duty vehicles to ensure a reliable fleet.

The role requires comprehensive knowledge of engine systems, proficiency with tools, and the physical ability to lift and work in various conditions. A valid Maryland CDL is essential, and ASE certification is preferred.

Job description

Position Overview

Auto Services Mechanic at the University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services. Responsibilities include diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing medium and heavy‑duty motor vehicles, transit buses, motor coaches, and related equipment to ensure a safe and reliable fleet.

Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on automobiles, light and medium duty vehicles, and specialized equipment such as heavy‑duty transit buses and motor coaches.
  • Inspect and test vehicles, automotive systems, and related equipment; diagnose malfunctions and make repairs, including fabrication, replacement, and assembly of parts; tune and adjust both 2‑ and 4‑cycle gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Execute preventive maintenance services such as fueling, oil changes, lubrication, and cleaning.
  • Conduct repair and routine maintenance (A, B, C, and D service, seasonal service, DOT inspections, and preventive inspections) on vehicles.
  • Use accepted techniques, available equipment, parts, and supplies; diagnose problems using diagnostic systems and computer equipment where appropriate.
  • Document all maintenance work on appropriate forms; record parts used, labor hours, and vehicle scheduling.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and a clean maintenance area; keep tools and parts organized.
  • Participate in the training of student maintenance assistants as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years progressively responsible experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing motor vehicles or equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of internal combustion engines, diesel and gasoline systems, and preventive maintenance techniques.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining standard hand and power tools.
  • Ability to diagnose and correct motor vehicle malfunctions and read/write oral and written instructions.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs, work at heights up to 25 feet, and operate in hazardous or confined spaces.
  • Valid Maryland commercial driver’s license (CDL) with Passenger & Air Brakes endorsement, or ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Preferred: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.
Physical Demands

Work in, on, around, over, and under stationary vehicles; lift, move, and manipulate tools and supplies up to 75 lbs; operate equipment with multiple controls; work in confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and adverse weather; wear personal protective equipment.

Licenses & Certifications
  • MD CDL Passenger & Air Brakes (required).
  • ASE certification preferred.
