Job summary

The Missouri Department of Corrections is seeking a skilled automotive/mechanical technician to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on a range of equipment in a correctional facility. The role supports in-house maintenance, safety compliance, and equipment reliability.

Candidates should have electronics knowledge, diagnostic skills, and the ability to lift heavy loads; prior experience with diagnostic systems is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older with two or more years of experience relevant/similar to the listed job functions or completion of a relevant technical training program or job certificate.
  • Knowledge of electronics, computer operations, and diagnostic system.
  • Ability to lift heavy loads and work in various positions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance related to automotive equipment such as adding or changing fluids, lubricating the vehicle and equipment for service, replacing spark plugs and wires.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, mechanical, and body work on light and/or heavy equipment.
  • Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, repairs, modifies, and restores heavy maintenance and construction equipment, and power generation equipment.
  • May supervise offender workers.
  • Organizes work on a daily basis exercising independence and judgment.
  • Prepares and maintains garage records and reports; submits requests for parts and materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be 18 years or older with two or more years of experience relevant/similar to the listed job functions or completion of a relevant technical training program or job certificate.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Knowledge of electronics, computer operations, and diagnostic system.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing mechanical defects.
  • Ability to use diagnostic and other tools needed in the performance of tasks.
  • Ability to lift heavy loads and work in various positions.

Contingent upon your position, you may also be eligible to receive:

  • A $2.00 per hour shift differential if you are assigned to a shift that begins on or between 12:00pm (noon) and 5:00am and are employed at a 24/7 congregate care facility (i.e. institution, transition center, supervision center, or command center).
  • A $0.75 per hour medium security or $1.50 maximum security differential if you work full-time at a qualifying facility.
  • A $1.00 per hour restrictive housing differential if you are assigned a regular post within a restrict housing/segregation unit at any facility.

The Department of Corrections currently offers a guaranteed 1% pay increase for every two years of continuous service up to 20 years! If you are transferring from another State of Missouri agency and are receiving state retention pay, please be advised that the Missouri Department of Corrections administers retention based upon your retention anniversary date. As a result, your retention pay upon transfer may differ from what you were receiving at your previous agency until you reach your applicable retention anniversary date.
