Responsibilities include representing the United States in civil litigation, performing substantial legal research, drafting pleadings, motions, and opinions, and coordinating with clients and staff in a demanding environment.

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree (or equivalent) and active membership in any U.S. bar by the date of entry on duty.
  • United States citizenship is required.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, negotiation, research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to volunteer assistance to other attorneys and demonstrate fair and sound judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the United States Attorney in the Civil Division by representing the United States in civil litigation.
  • Defensive litigation involving the Federal Torts Claims Act, the Administrative Procedures Act, Title VII, constitutional torts, habeas corpus claims in immigration matters, and other areas of the law.
  • Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) actions to enforce federal law.
  • Representing the United States as primary counsel in hearings, oral arguments, and trials in the U.S. District Court and U.S. Court of Appeals.
  • Conduct substantial legal research, drafting pleadings, motions, and opinions at trial and appellate levels.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other attorneys, support staff, and client agencies in a demanding environment.
