Job summary

City of Colorado Springs is seeking an Auditor I to support the internal audit function by performing foundational audit tasks under supervision. This role targets early-career professionals developing auditing principles and standards.

You will assist in gathering documentation, lead simple audits, perform data analysis in Excel, and help document internal controls with oversight. This position offers growth toward Auditor II and supports professional development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, finance, public administration, or a related field.
• Knowledge of IPPF, ethical principles, QAIP, and audit governance.
• Ability to use Microsoft Excel to perform basic data sorting, filtering, summarization, and accurate reporting.
• Willingness to learn and grow toward Auditor II role.

About this Job:

The Auditor I supports the internal audit function by performing foundational audit tasks under supervision. This role is designed for early-career professionals who are developing their understanding of internal auditing principles, methodologies, and standards. You will assist in conducting audits that promote accountability, transparency, and performance improvement across the organization. This position aligns with Basic proficiency in the IIA’s Internal Auditing Competency Framework and supports professional growth toward an Auditor II role.

This position is subject to budget required furloughs to be implemented in the 2026 calendar year.

As an Auditor I, you will:

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:

• The International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF).
• Ethical principles such as integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality.
• The basic components of a Quality Assurance and Improvement Program (QAIP).
• The steps in an audit engagement and the role of internal audit in governance.

Ability to:

• Use Microsoft Excel to perform basic data sorting, filtering, summarization, and accurate reporting.

• Communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
• Take the initiative to learn about risk, controls, and audit standards.

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, finance, public administration, or a related field.

• Interest in pursuing a professional certification such as CIA (Certified Internal Auditor), CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner), PMP (Project Management Professional), or advanced degree.
