ANNUAL SALARY

$77,318 to $113,044 and $86,526 to $126,491

NOTES:
  1. Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.
  2. Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change. Please confirm the starting salary with the hiring department before accepting a job offer.

An Auditor conducts audits of financial and information systems, accounting and related records of contractors, City departments and other entities to determine the accuracy of revenue, expenditures, contractor compliance, and the adequacy of internal controls; recommends necessary changes in systems and procedures; and prepares reports on audits.

  1. One year of full-time paid professional experience in government, enterprise, commercial, or financial accounting or auditing in a class at the level of Accountant; and
  2. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with either:
    • A major in accounting;
    • B. Satisfactory completion of at least 24 semester or 36 quarter units in the following courses: Principles of Accounting I and II (full year introductory course); Intermediate Accounting I and II (full year course); Cost Accounting; or Auditing; and either Governmental Accounting I and II, Tax Accounting, or upper-level data processing (full year course).
PROCESS NOTES
  1. Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience at the time of filing may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.
  2. Applicants who are in their final semester or quarter before graduation from an accredited college or university may apply; however, they cannot be appointed until completion of all required course work, including the 24 semester units or 36 quarter units described in Requirement 2b.
  3. As a condition of employment for the Auditor positions within the Department of General Services and Public Works - Bureau of Sanitation, a valid Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Applicants will be disqualified or deemed ineligible for hire if their DMV record reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation within the last 36 months in any state or jurisdiction. The City of Los Angeles reserves the right to issue a notice of disqualification or ineligibility at any time before a final job offer is extended.
  4. For qualifying work experience in Requirement #1, the term “professional experience”: applies to positions that require possession of a degree from an accredited four-year college or university in order to obtain that position. Therefore, to be considered “professional,” non-City qualifying experience must be gained in positions requiring a four-year degree.
  5. All applicants must list their education information in the Supplemental Questions section of the on-line application, including the school name and location, type of degree earned, major, accounting and auditing course titles, number of semester or quarter units, and completion dates. Responses lacking this information may be subject to disqualification.

  7. Candidates completing the examination process may be contacted by the Personnel Department to provide required proof of qualifying degree and coursework. Applicants who wish to expedite this process may attach a copy of their transcripts (annotated with accounting courses, credit earned, and grade received) or qualifying degree to their on-line application at the time of filing in the Attachments section.
  8. Some positions in this class are required to perform field audits for which incumbents must provide their own transportation. Employees who intend to drive their own vehicle or a City vehicle to satisfy this requirement shall possess a valid California driver’s license upon appointment. In those situations where the employee’s private vehicle is to be used, the vehicle shall be properly insured for use in City service upon appointment. Mileage will be paid in accordance with established policies.
  9. An employee in this class may be required to work weekends and evenings.

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Analytical Ability; Attention to Detail; Self-Management; Fact Finding; Interpersonal Skills; Oral Communication; Written Communication; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing; Generally Accepted Auditing Standards; Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS); auditing procedures, such as testing payroll, cash disbursements, and revenues; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to prepare some technical, written material related to the duties and responsibilities of an Auditor. This material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory technical exercise will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory technical exercise must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory technical exercise for which a candidate is required to provide an answer. Please note that candidates must complete the advisory technical exercise and meet the minimum qualifications as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.

The advisory technical exercise will be administered on-line. Candidates invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory technical exercise. Candidates will be required to complete the on-line advisory technical exercise between MONDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2026 and MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2026. Candidates who fail to complete the advisory technical exercise as instructed may be disqualified.

Candidates will be notified later by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interview, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2026 to FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2026.
