Audit Specialist – Government Grants (Affordable Housing Sector)

Location: Remote (with potential on-site audit work)
Start Date: Targeting week of May 19
Compensation: Starting at $50/hour (DOE)
Duration: 2–4 months (project-based)

Our client, a nonprofit organization in the affordable housing sector, is seeking two Audit Specialists to join a small audit team supporting government grants distributed to grantee organizations. These grants fund private nonprofits and cooperatives that help low-income families transition to and maintain permanent housing through counseling and support services.

Role Summary:

The Audit Specialists will work under direct supervision and be responsible for supporting grant compliance efforts through audit testing and documentation review.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct testing based on grantor-supplied criteria

  • Determine allowability of costs under federal grant regulations

  • Verify compliance with expense thresholds and reporting requirements

  • Assess internal controls, operational processes, and cash management practices

  • Support audit documentation and reporting deliverables

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

  • CPA (preferred but not required)

  • 3+ years of audit experience (ideally in grants or nonprofit environments)

  • Experience assessing internal and operational controls

  • Advanced Excel skills (Pivot Tables a must)

  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience auditing federal or nonprofit grants

  • Familiarity with 2 CFR 200, internal control guides, and continuous monitoring frameworks
