Audit Manager / Audit Director - Governmental Assurance

Compensation: Approximately $140,000 - $256,000 depending on experience, credentials, and level of hire.

Our client, a nationally recognized Top 100 public accounting and advisory firm, is seeking an experienced Audit Manager or Audit Director to join its growing Governmental Assurance practice. This is a unique opportunity for an accomplished public accounting professional to step into a leadership role supporting state and local government entities, special districts, charter schools, and other public sector organizations.

The firm is open to hiring at either the Manager or Director level based on experience, technical expertise, leadership background, and business development capabilities. Whether you are an established Audit Manager ready for the next step or an experienced Director seeking a larger platform, this position offers significant growth potential within a highly respected public accounting firm.

What You'll Do

As a key member of the Assurance leadership team, you will:

• Manage multiple audit, review, and assurance engagements simultaneously
• Lead engagement planning, execution, staffing, scheduling, and workflow coordination
• Develop strong relationships with governmental and public sector clients
• Serve as a trusted advisor regarding accounting, auditing, and compliance matters
• Oversee engagement budgets, timelines, profitability, and resource allocation
• Review financial statements, audit reports, workpapers, and client deliverables
• Ensure compliance with professional standards and firm methodologies
• Mentor, train, supervise, and evaluate audit staff and managers
• Identify engagement risks, technical issues, and practical solutions
• Collaborate with Partners and firm leadership on client service initiatives
• Participate in recruiting, staff development, and succession planning efforts
• Support business development activities and cultivate referral relationships

Director-Level Responsibilities

Candidates hired at the Director level will also:

• Serve as a strategic leader within the Governmental Assurance practice
• Act as a subject matter expert for governmental accounting and auditing matters
• Assume engagement leadership responsibilities and, where applicable, serve as engagement partner
• Participate in complex client consultations and technical reviews
• Lead new client pursuits, proposal presentations, and fee discussions
• Develop and maintain a network of business relationships that generates new revenue opportunities
• Play a significant role in the growth and expansion of the practice

What We're Looking For

Audit Manager Candidates

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
• Active CPA license
• 5+ years of public accounting experience
• Significant experience auditing state and local governments, including cities, counties, special districts, charter schools, or similar entities
• Strong leadership, client management, and project management skills

Audit Director Candidates

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
• Active CPA license
• Approximately 10+ years of public accounting experience, including leadership experience at the Senior Manager or Director level
• Demonstrated expertise in governmental auditing and client relationship management
• Proven business development and practice growth experience preferred

Technical Experience

Successful candidates should possess experience with:

• U.S. GAAP
• Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS)
• Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS / Yellow Book)
• Governmental and public sector financial reporting
