Job description

Newman CPA is the largest national CPA firm focused exclusively on Common Interest Realty Associations (CIRAs). From our base in Carlsbad, CA, we serve thousands of associations across the country, and our clients stay with us. Our retention reflects the quality and consistency of our work.

We’re in a defined growth phase. We're aggressively building our national platform both organically and through acquisition. That means new markets, new books of business, and heavy investment in AI-enabled operations.

Join a team of hands-on builders setting the standard for CIRA audit and tax nationally. Growth means opportunity here: as the firm expands, senior seats open, and we promote the people we train. We invest in structured technical training, CPA exam support, and leaders whose job includes training you to operate at the next level.

The Role

As an Audit Manager, you are in charge of a portfolio of clients. You are responsible for the quality of your team’s files, the seniors and staff who produce them, the schedule that keeps them moving, and the client relationships behind them.

You are the last technical review before a report goes up for sign-off. The more complex accounting and auditing questions come to you, and you are expected to resolve them or escape with a recommendation rather than a question. A main responsibility is to identify potential engagement issues in the planning stage, not during the last review.

You develop staff into seniors who can run engagements and build their own staff, which is how a firm growing this quickly stays consistent. That means real supervision, honest performance feedback, and the willingness to have the conversation early rather than at review time.

What You'll Oversee
  • A portfolio of engagements, not one at a time, but simultaneously. You are responsible for all phases of the audit, review, and compilation engagements assigned to you, from planning through issuance.
  • Final technical review before sign-off, covering workpapers, financial statements, footnote disclosures, and reports. What leaves your desk should require minimal changes above you.
  • Developing seniors, which is the highest-leverage thing you do. Coaching them on review, on running a job, and on managing staff of their own, plus written performance evaluations and honest feedback in real time.
  • Supervision of seniors and staff, including reviewing their work, matching people to engagements that fit their qualifications, and knowing your team well enough to staff a job correctly.
  • Technical judgment on the questions that get escalated to you: reserve fund matters, unusual or non-routine transactions, going concern indicators, related parties, and disclosure adequacy. You resolve them or bring a recommendation to a superior.
  • Engagement economics, including budgets, realization, and flagging a scope or fee problem early enough that it can still be addressed.
  • Client relationships, serving as the escalation contact, ensuring your staff is communicating progress and issues. Also, presenting audit results to boards and committees as necessary.
  • Anticipating problems before they surface. You are expected to know which engagements are at risk and to raise them before a deadline is in question.
  • Keeping firm leadership informed of significant developments in your engagements, with an analysis and a recommended course of action.
  • Post-fieldwork wrap-up, clearing quality control and review notes thoroughly and on time.
  • Contributing to the firm through recruiting, training, methodology improvements, and participation in management meetings.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting, or a related field with an accounting emphasis
  • Active CPA license in good standing
  • 5 or more years of audit experience in public accounting
  • 2 or more years supervising and reviewing the work of seniors and staff
  • A track record of running multiple concurrent engagements and delivering them on time and on budget
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP and GAAS, and the ability to research a technical question and reach a defensible answer
  • Experience as a primary client contact, including delivering difficult messages
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, and sound judgment about what needs to be escalated
  • Authorization to work permanently in the United States
Even Better
  • Experience auditing common interest realty associations, including FASB ASC 972 and the Davis-Stirling Act
  • Adjacent high-volume recurring assurance work: nonprofit and Single Audit, employee benefit plans, or governmental fund accounting
  • Experience with a paperless audit environment and workflow tools such as Engagement Manager, GoFileRoom, and the Thomson Reuters Suite of products
What We Offer
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Comprehensive health coverage: medical, dental, vision. Life insurance available.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Focus on work/life balance
  • Strong mentoring program with a focus on the success of each team member
